This essay will take you through definition of social justice along with how it broadly relates to diversity and differences in Australia as detailed by various research. I have also drawn Rawls principles to further explain why his principles are important in relation to education setting for Australia. I have also drawn on some other research which is very similar to Rawls theory and his principles which is applicable for early childhood setting. Furthermore, there will be discussion why social justice and its principles are important when working with children along with how educators’ attitudes towards handling social justice impact on children’s attitude of seeing the diversity. Lastly, I have mentioned some issues of implementing social justice within the practice. Social justice defines as justice for everyone in the environment that we are living in. Everyone in this world deserve to be respected, have equal rights regardless of gender, ethnicity, language, disability and many more (Rawls,1958). If a person gets respect and equal rights within society their self-esteem will get promoted (Plummer,2010). If the self esteem is high in human being, they can achieve everything what they want and the society plays an important role in it. Exploration of diversity in early childhood makes us as an educator stand against inequalities and develop self-worth as well as provide everyone sense of belonging, I believe diversity will help me to understand how different learning needs suitable for different child (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2013), For example, during my placement I observed that there is one parent complaining to educator that my child does not have any friend and my child is keep complaining about that. What I found out that family comes from bilingual background and educators are not taking any action rather than saying that child holds personality like that. Finally, I have suggested that by providing buddy program will help that child to gain confidence and play with everyone. Children are visual learner; they learn what they see and observe what is happening around them (DET,2019). By intervening of adult, supports children self-worth and makes them provide sense of belonging ( Robinson, K. H., & Díaz, C. J.,2006). There are so many principles about social justice which many theorists and researched have explained. Rawls has mentioned two principles which is most suitable for early childhood education, because this sector is offering and supporting and recognising diversity and differences on a broad range. The first principle is
resources should be shared equally with everyone for social justice to be applied fairly and the second one is equal rights regardless of their culture, background, gender, ethnicity, and special needs children (Rawls,1971). This is important when a diverse range of families attend service every day. There are so many principles for social justice when you do research on it. What I found during my outside research about social justice principle is very much like Rawls principle from an article called Corporate Finance Institute. This article have mentioned five principles these are equity, participation, diversity, access to resources and human rights. Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) has special emphasized on providing cultural responsiveness education. EYLF also support to promote educators to provide education through practice, principle and learning outcome for young children from 0 to 5 (DET,2019). This kind of framework reflects on children and their families by supporting their positive diverse cultural identities. When families and children are respected and feel inclusive their lives get changed locally as well as globally. Early childhood educator play an important role in implementing these policies to emphasize the notion of being, belonging and becoming in children’s life (Robinson, K. H.et al, 2006). Early childhood educators are on that position to shape the children’s lives and way of thinking in a right direction. This can be done through taking consideration the policies within the service, curriculum that we are implementing for children within the learning environment, and our pedagogy we are utilising when we are having conversation and implementing cultural activities with children. Implementing social justice and advocacy these all also matters which cultural background, location and way of thinking educators are carrying on themselves when approaching families and children regarding any conversation specifically diversity and differences (Lindon J ,2012). As a teacher it is important to have knowledge about social justice and advocacy for children. Educators are impacting children life as young children are capable of understanding difference between culture, colour and gender. Educator should know how to handle social justice issues such as how to implement aboriginal language within the service. For example, Harmony Day, on that day teacher can implement cultural activities with cultural puppets, which will help children to respect and celebrate the differences in all people and get to know about all the cultures.

Educator should know how to handle social justice issues as our attitude towards social justice directly impact on children’s attitude and behaviour. For example, how to implement and your view about Aboriginal language within the service will directly affect children’s attitude towards Aboriginal culture. While working with children in early childhood setting the rights of the child is first priority which will be served by providing equitable resources, education and focus on children’s wellbeing, health and safety among all children (DET,2010). The major issues and challenges implementing social justice in practice will be students with disability will force to change to normal if they want to learn and thrive with other children. Other one of implementing social justice within education setting could be early childhood educators holding strong opinion about gender, ethnicity, race, and disability. It can be sometime harsh comment when dealing with situation because educator has such a strong point of view about social justice. When discrimination and bias work together they go against social justice (Lindon,2012). Children’s attitude and behaviour is shaped by adults’ attitudes towards world. From young age children are seeing the world with their close adult’s eyes and develop that attitude for world. This is one of the major factors if service is trying to embed social justice practice and that affect all the stakeholders within the service. For example, an English girl to another girl I am English you are not because your language is different from mine. The positive attitude of adult handling this situation will impact on both the girl to see the world positively (Robinson & Diaz,2016). It is important to consider social justice and social inequality in early childhood education system because families are sending their children and attending service because they have trust on you that their child will get justice as well as their need will be met, their voices will be respected and we as an educator will provide and advocate for them honestly This essay has concluded what social justice is and why it is important to explore in aspects of diversity and differences specially in Australia that we are living and in which has diverse range of culture. This essay has also concluded principles of Rawls theory of justice as fairness in early childhood education. This essay has some outside research which I find out suitable for educator to implement and work on social justice and advocacy. There have been some legislation and policies which
I have drawn up as well in relevant to early childhood sector. Lastly, I have also drawn upon what are the challenges of implementing social justice in practice and how it impacts families and children.
