Family structure can be different in many ways now. “ A family structure, or family unit, is the basic grouping of members in a family.” (Blessing, 2023) In older times family structure meant two-parents, a mother, father who are raising their biological children. The family we are looking at in the current family case study, Stan is in the military and is unmarried who was co- parenting with Deidre who is Charles’s mom. Her death from overdosing, made Stan a single father. Lorraine, Deidre’s mother, and Charles’s grandmother, moved in with Stand to help care for her grandson. Lorraine unfortunately was unable to care for Charles alone due to being disabled. So, when Stan was deployed, Lorraine moved in with John and Mike since they became the guardians of Charlie. Charlie will live with John, Mike and their two twin daughters, Presley, and Aubrey. John and Mike are non-traditional parents since they are a homosexual couple raising twins and now Charlie. John works outside the home, while Mike, a writer, works from home and provides care for the children. Families will all face challenges as does this family. They face some unique challenges. John and Mike might struggle financially to provide for another child and another adult in the household. “They might also struggle to find quality family time due to job schedules and having more than one child in the household. As a homosexual couple they can also face some challenges. The truth is they can be just as committed and loving as heterosexual ones. They can also have the same types of conflict: family, finances, household chores, parenting, and so on.” (GoodTherapy.org, 2013) There could be discrimination, stereotypes, and judgement from those who are on the outside of the relationship. These feelings and thoughts can carry over to their children’s education, medical and people of their community. This could be a huge negative factor in their support system by their family feeling like they are alone. Also having a 2

smaller home, you now must accommodate two extra people, one who is disabled. Lorraine could be a huge stressor on Mike and John due to the loss of her daughter and her mental state. Lorraine comes from a different background than the one she will be moving into. Lorraine had an extended family which included her parents’ family members, aunts, uncles, and grandparents living under one roof. John and Mike’s family is different because they live separately from Stan who is Mike’s brother. Lorraine moves in with Stan due to the loss of daughter, Deirdre. Lorraine’s upbringing has probably taught her that grandparent’s step in and take care of their family as needed. “These families headed by a grandparent often are called “grandfamilies,” and they are common among families in which a relative has taken over primary responsibility for raising a child from parents (known as “kinship care”). ( When Grandparents Become Parents to Their Grandchildren , 2022) Since Stan was deployed, a situation arose, where Lorraine and Charlie had to move in with John and Mike. This change in the family dynamics creates an extended family situation. The new family consists of John, Mike, Lorraine and the three children, Charlie, Aubrey, and Presley. One big family occupying one household now. “Science tells us that some children develop resilience or the ability to overcome serious hardship, while others do not.” ( Resilience , 2020) Building resiliency in children can be a good technique to have for when they become older and are met with more serious situations in their lives. Lorraine, Mike, and John can help build resiliency in the children by helping ensure their health and helping them by having a stable family belief system at home. If and when problems might arise, then the adults in the household should model open communication, goal setting, understanding and empathy practices, respect, and their freedom to express how they feel. A family’s values and ideals help shape the way people respond to adversity, including how people 3

treat each other, their attitudes, and behaviors. This also helps build relationships and make connections with people around you. One resource that would be beneficial to Lorraine and her extended family would be Interagency Task Force on Military and Veterans Mental Health. This resource helps provide mental health care to military personnel and their families. Charlie may not understand it now, but he has a father who has a pretty serious role in our society, but he also lost his mother. So, he will need some help navigating his new life and how to deal with the loss of a parent. This resource can also help Stan. Stan might see a lot of different traumatic events when he is deployed and being away from his family might cause him some issues so having this resource available can help him as well. Another resource that can help the family would be Military One Source. Military One Source is a website that helps military families in many ways including mental health care and even just support. Military One Source tries to help in all aspects of life but if they can’t help then they lead you in the right direction. It can be tough being a military family but with the right sources, Lorraine, and everyone else can lead successful lives and make sure the children are being raised in a caring, supportive, loving household.
