Federal government The Federal government is at the top of the tiar. The constitution gives legislative power to the federal government. Prospective laws are known as bills and are filed by the parliament's representatives, the bill is voted on by the house of representatives, and if passed moves to the senate to be debated and voted on further. If the bill is passed by the Senate, this means a new law or amendment to an existing law occurs. Other responsibilities the federal government has includes Represent the interests of the Australian people Collecting taxes and allocating the spending of taxes in annual budgets in major portfolios such as education, health and aged care, and social services. State Government State governments work together and separate from the federal government. Each state has its constitution, and sometimes responsibilities will overlap with the federal government. State government responsibilities include Making laws relevant for state purposes Repairing and construction of roads Industrial relations Policing communities and appointing judges Determining how crown land will be used Funding and overseeing public transport Funding hospitals and schools (some funding may be provided by the federal government Public housing Local government At the bottom of the tiar is the local government. Local governments assist in the devolvement of the areas they represent economically, socially and culturally (Vic councils, n.d) There are many local governments within each state and territory in Australia. Local governments can apply for funding from state and federal governments and can distribute funding to local services and businesses within the area. Some responsibilities of local governments include The collection land rates from property owners go towards local services such as rubbish collection and maintenance of public areas. Maintenance of public areas – park areas, wetlands etc Pest control Parking Noise regulations Food safety regulations Question 2: Provide three examples of the impact of government policy on individuals and families. Examples response Government decisions to reduce the rate of income support received by individuals and families, create further hardship for families and individuals, meaning more reliance on community service programs which include food security programs, mental health support, employment assistance, and subsidised housing. Education funding cuts place great strain particularly on low-income families to purchase the necessities for education. The burden is passed on to community services to provide cash handouts, and subsidised materials resources and equipment. Changes to bulk billing in health services mean that many people go without medical care because they simply cannot afford the fees charged. Question 3: Research democracy in Australia, and explain what democracy means for you. Example response Democracy means that I live in a country that promotes freedom of choice. My human rights are protected by government, and I have the right to vote. As a woman I experience freedoms other may not in other countries such as right to education, right to vote, right to choose who I marry. Question 4: What does inequality mean?
