Report
Social worker engagement in policy making has a long history, dating back to the early 1900’s (Jannson, 2020). However, the level and type of engagement has certainly evolved over the past century. Today, social workers can be actively involved in assessing, evaluating, formulating and implementing policy (Jannson, 2020). While some social workers may conduct research of their own, others may opt to present empirical evidence based upon the research of others to identify issues with current policy and develop alternate solutions (National Association of Social Workers, 2023). Social workers can also advocate for policy change at the micro, mezzo and macro level (Jannson, 2020). There are several theories, perspectives and frameworks social workers can employ in their policy making endeavors. For instance, a systems perspective could be used to examine the interplay of multiple systems – community, family, society – to develop policies that support individuals and families within these systems (Hutchison, 2019). A conflict perspective might examine root causes of inequality amid power struggles with the goal of developing policies that promote equality, social justice and fairness, while eliminating poverty and inequality (Hutchison, 2019). The strengths perspective could be used to examine the strengths of individuals and families to develop policies that recognize and bolster those strengths, provide resources and foster empowerment and self-determination (Hutchison, 2019).
