What can social workers do to better advocate for social welfare policies for Latinos? Social workers can be critical agents of change in social welfare policies for the Latino community as well as other minority populations. In order to do this, social workers must aim to enhance their cultural competence skills, in doing so, social workers will also enhance knowledge on different Latino characteristics, values, and beliefs in order to better comprehend the population’s needs and deliver culturally sensitive interventions, services, and policies. Social workers can also take action in shifting existing policies and creating new policies that are more supportive and inclusive of the Latino population. Social workers should also participate in advocacy and education of culturally sensitive policies and raise awareness on the barriers that exist, and how they impact the specific population.
