As you complete the Ecomap, explain what experiences you have had with family economic and cultural diversity that will be helpful to you in social work. What can you do to build your understanding and skills in this area? Through completing both the Ecomap and the Lifeline I have been able to look at my life from a different perspective. Never before have I laid it out in such a way that I was able to physically see how I am connected to the systems around me or what life events occurred and in what year they occurred. Through these projects I was able to connect that with my experience of a split family, by living through it, I will be able to help others who also are experiencing similar circumstances. Though every situation will be different, in my focused line of work as a school Social Worker, when students come to me from a split household, I will have a great understanding of the impact that happens to them from being raised under two separate roofs. One recent test of the family economic stress model, using prospective longitudinal data, found that eco-nomic hardship led to economic pressure, and eco-nomic pressure was associated with parental emotional distress and couple conflict.(Hutchinson, 2019) Sometimes these split household situations will have parents that do not get along, the parents will view raising their children drastically different so the household rules and expectations will not be the same and these children are constantly on the go having to travel from one home to the other. All of these factors and many more can cause chaos, inconsistencies and other issues for children. Parental emotional distressed couple conflict were associated with harsh parenting and behavior problems in children (Neppl, Senia,& Donnellan, 2015). Through my knowledge and firsthand experience with my own two step children, I hope to be able to better help these children. References Hutchison, E. D.
