Post your initial response to the following:  Explain the role peer group acceptance plays in identity development among children in middle childhood. Also discuss whether peer acceptance is a predictor of successful adjustment in middle childhood.  Peer group acceptance plays a role in identity development among children in middle childhood age can be based on the labels of popular and/or unpopular. “Peer groups can cultivate identity development as popular coincides with positive characteristics and the unpopular coincides with negative characteristics”. (Zastrow, C. H., Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hessenauer, S. L., 2019) In this age group, children will often be more influenced by their peers and won’t have much interest with thriving on the acceptance from their caregivers. “As children engage in more activities, with opportunities to be successful or not, and to enjoy them or not, they begin to develop a self-concept”. (McLean, K.C. & Syed, M., 2018) In middle childhood, peer acceptance can be a predictor of successful adjustment. Although children are maturing at this age in their life and this can change over time. It can be easy to automatically assume that a child who is popular will have a successful adjustment but it can be a 50/50 chance. Social and communication skills are two of the skills needed when navigating the social interaction world while also guiding towards transition. Then, imagine that you are working with a child being raised by older relatives, as in the  Big Mama  video. How would you expect the family situation to affect the child’s identity development? When an older individual that is a relative is raising a child, the family situation could affect the child’s identity development depending on the basis of why the child is in that type of situation. A child-like Walter in the video “ Big Mama” , has several psychological development issues such as PTSD from the loss of his parents, one to drug use and one to death. (Seretean,T., 2000) It is not uncommon (and could be expected) that the child would go through some feelings of depression, isolation, or not feeling worthy/ good enough. Even with a lot of love being shown to the child, some negative impacts can alter the mindset of the child’s identity development. Also, older individuals might express love in a different way and may struggle with caring for children due to age and also due to the developmental milestones/challenges. “Sometimes the parental style is not conducive and respected during a child’s identity development at a young age because they are quicker to rebel and focus mostly on social interactions”. (Zastrow, C. H., Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hessenauer, S. L., 2019)
