1-3 Multicultural Case Analysis COU-520 Diversity in Counseling Krysta McGinnis Southern New Hampshire University
1. Describe what you observe about how the client may have experienced otherness. In the instance of Jeanette, she first tells you that she feels empty most of the time and that her friends are dating and building relationships, but she also claims that men ignore her. That is one instance that I have seen her encounter otherness; she also tells you about birthmarks in another instance. She has birthmarks and moles all over her face and neck in this picture. She informs the counselor that in elementary school, the other kids used to call her a monster and share their pencils, crafts, and other things that she could have touched. Although she claims to have grown accustomed to it, she did notice others gazing at her as she grew older. I can see that she may have encountered two of these other things. 2. Establish context for your case by briefly describing the client based on the information that you are presented with in the case scenario. Include the client’s identified reasoning for seeking counseling. As the only child, 22-year-old Jeanette is a Caucasian woman with a rocky connection with her parents. She visits the counselor because she frequently feels empty. She notes that the friends around her are dating or in relationships, and she claims in the session that most of the time, boys appear to ignore her. During the session, Jeanette shares with you the birthmarks and moles on her neck and face. She describes in great detail how the other kids used to call her a monster and would not let them touch anything she touched or owned when she was younger. She says she is used to people gazing at her, but as she gets older, she has noticed it too. She continues by describing her parents as "tent revival evangelicals" and how, when she would confide in them about her loneliness, they would never know what to do and would instead advise her to pray more. She continues to tell you during the session about how she has worked two jobs in addition to her studies to help pay for her education. She is now finishing her bachelor's degree in
psychology and intends to pursue doctoral work. Additionally, you find out via therapy that she genuinely hopes to find love and even says she feels incredibly moved and starved. 3. Describe the barriers that have played a role in the client’s ability or willingness to access professional counseling services and explain how you will address those barriers. The customer has had obstacles due to her upbringing by her parents. Being an only child, they did not assist her in appropriately processing her emotions, and when she asked for assistance, all they would say was to pray to get rid of the negative emotions. She can now handle situations more independently because she is older, and in this instance, I think she will try to get aid right away if her parents don't encourage her. In my role as her counselor, I don't know how I would handle this if it came up, but I do believe that since she is 22 years old, she will have more autonomy to make her own judgments. I'll endeavor to devise a plan to help her feel more in charge of the process of receiving the care she needs for the problems she is seeing me for, I will work with her to set up appropriate limits with her parents right away and gradually increase the freedoms she already enjoys. It is my goal that she will continue to visit me but given her current independence and the fact that her parents are the main reason she was unable to receive assistance, I believe she will be more than happy to continue our sessions. 4. What are the steps you will take in analyzing your client’s case to ensure that you are being objective and unbiased. Initially, I will take care to inform the client of her confidentiality boundaries and our culture differences. She can let me know if she feels that these differences will negatively affect our therapy partnership. Based on what she has previously told me and what she will continue to

tell me in our meetings, I will examine the situation. By doing this, I will be able to utilize it to get to know my client better, which will enable me to have more candid conversations with her and give her the freedom to express herself freely about any issue. Given that her parents forbade this, I believe that this alone will encourage her to open to me and feel like a safe place. I believe that by conducting the sessions in this way, I will be able to remain as impartial and objective as possible because, if I can put my client at rest, doing so will also help me remain at ease and impartial during our sessions. 5. Explain any considerations you will keep in mind regarding your own culture when working with your client, as well as how that culture might influence the way you counsel them. Apart from having two sisters instead of just one parent, I am not all that different from the client in this circumstance. I shall bear in mind that, based on the facts provided, she is an only child and that her parents remain together. Although I wasn't raised in a religious household, I know from being around others who have that it may play a significant role in who they are, so I will also bear that in mind when considering her upbringing. Though I don't really see my culture getting in the way of the client's care, I will always make sure to ask the client if they see any differences and if they think they would feel better with someone else, I can always refer them if they so want.
