.01. In this movie, there were different “definitions” of family. Be specific with examples from the film and cite, apply, and reference the text. One example of a family that was shown in the movie was the traditional family. According to the text this family is defined as “ a married couple and their biological child or children in one household” (Moore & Asay, 2017)This can be shown in Haos immediate family. Hao and his sister lived in a household with their mother and father. The father mainly provided for the family and the mother can be seen always cleaning the house. 2. In the film, Hao and Eric use the decision-making process. Give an example of a decision that they made and “walk” through the decision-making process with examples for the decision and the process. Cite, apply, and reference the text. An example of how Hao and Eric used decision making was when they were deciding if they should tell Haos grandfather that he doesnt have a wife and is gay. In the end they decided to not tell Haos grandfather by making a rational decision. In the text rational decision making can be explained as “searching for alternatives, assessing consequences, estimating risk or uncertainty, determining the value of consequences, and selecting the action that maximizes attainment of the desired object”. (Moore & Asay, 2017) Hao and Eric thought of alternatives on how they could tell his grandfather, thought of the consequences that would come with telling his grandfather and realized how this decision would impact his grandfather and then determined that it was best not to tell his grandfather to protect him. This is an example of how they made this rational decision. 3.Chapters 1-3 discuss cultural influences and the family within cultural contexts. Apply, cite, and reference the text to specific examples in the movie of cultural influences, contents, and differences. During the movie there were many cultural influences within the family. In the text it is explained that “families pass learned behaviors and experiences, or a cultural heritage from generation to generation”. There were many examples of this in the movie. One example is when Hao went to celebrate the chinese new year with his family. One tradition that they had was to eat food even if they weren't hungry but just because it was good for them. Haos mother forced his son to eat even though the baby was not hungry. This is because it is their culture. Another example could be when the family was discussing how important it was to be married and to have children. This influenced Hao because he wanted to have kids not only for himself but for his family because it was important to them. 4. Using a DIFFERENT theory that you used in the Jay-Z movie assignment, apply a theory from the text to the family (any family configuration that was depicted in the film could work for this response). Apply, cite, and reference the text.
One theory that I observed in the movie was the conflict theory. In the text It was explained that this involves those being oppressed joining forces and challenging their oppressors and conditions can be changed. I believe this is somewhat similar to Hao and him being gay. His mother and father did not seem to accept that, but his sister was more understanding. It seems as though Haos parents were a little bit more understanding because they saw that his sister seemed to be ok. It almost seemed as though they came together to try to convince their parents that he was still family and everything was going to be ok. It also seems as though 5. These chapters explore historical and demographics changes that have occurred in time with families. Cite, apply, and reference the text and give very specific examples to the film, demonstrating that you watched the film and can connect it to course content. One historical change within families is that marriages have become less common, According to the text “the family structures are constantly evolving, with half than all children living with two married parents”.(Moore & Asay, 2017) This can be shown in the family because Haos grandparents and parents were married and have children. That was not the case for Hao, he was not married when having his children. This has become more common and acceptable in today's society.
