Module 8 Short Responses – Question 1 Consider the following statement: The support of non-Native Alaskans was an important factor leading to the settlement of Alaska Native land claims . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes; Native Alaskans received more favorable settlements due to the support from non- Native Alaskans in government and influential positions. One such example was the Secretary of the Interior, who had previously served as Governor of Alaska. This backing helped in achieving settlements that were more beneficial for Natives in the United States. Furthermore, the public's empathetic understanding of the events in Georgia influenced them to put pressure on the government to act more justly in this situation. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 2 Consider the following statement: ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, the evidence presented in the learning block supports the conclusion that ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives. The government's eagerness to work with the Natives and the provisions of ANCSA allowed them to retain important and holy land while receiving compensation for the land they chose to give up. The Natives were able to keep 44 million acres, and they were approved for a substantial amount of funding, including cash payments from state revenue generated by an oil program established through ANCSA. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 3 Consider the following statement: ANCSA led to economic benefits for white Alaskans as well as for Natives . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, the statement is supported by the evidence presented in the learning block. All Alaskans were indeed allowed to enroll in the corporations established by ANCSA, providing them with profits and benefits. The corporations also allowed the extraction of resources from the land. Additionally, the oil companies were generally profitable and contributed to payments of about $2,000 per year to both the Natives and non-Natives. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 4
For an American Literature course: What skills from this course would you use to develop a brief essay on the significance of Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," a poem written in the summer of 1865? After carefully reading and analyzing the poem, I would craft a well-supported thesis statement that highlights its significance. To bolster this thesis, I would select specific verses or passages from the poem and provide written analysis or annotations that reinforce my arguments. Additionally, I would incorporate relevant secondary sources that provide additional evidence to strengthen the arguments put forth in the promotional tool. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 5 For a Sociology course: What skills from this course would you use to produce an annotated bibliography for your course research project? When creating an annotated bibliography, it is important to diligently record and organize the information gathered from each resource. This involves taking comprehensive notes that summarize the main ideas, arguments, and evidence presented in each source. Additionally, evaluating the credibility and relevance of the sources is vital to ensure the reliability and suitability for the project. This process of careful note-taking and source evaluation helps to build a strong foundation for the annotated bibliography, providing reliable and informative references for the project. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 6 For a Business course: What skills from this course would you use to decide between two different investment proposals? When reviewing multiple proposals, it is essential to critically analyze their credibility and supporting evidence. This involves thoroughly examining the sources referenced, verifying their expertise and reputation, and assessing the quality of the evidence presented. Evaluating the values and beliefs underlying each proposal is also important in selecting the most suitable option for the company. By aligning the chosen proposal with the company's needs and values, the company can ensure a coherent and effective solution that will contribute to its success. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 7 How can history serve as a lens for the rest of the academic program you'll pursue at SNHU? Has this course changed the way you think about what you want to study? Why or why not?
Please respond to this question in two to three sentences, using proper grammar. Studying history allows me to gain a deeper understanding of human experiences and the factors that shape societies. As a psychology major, this knowledge serves as a valuable lens in my academic pursuits, helping me analyze and contextualize various subjects. While this course has not specifically changed my career aspirations, it has reinforced the importance of historical perspectives in shaping my overall academic program. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 8 What did you learn about one of these topics or historical events that was new or surprising to you? Explain in at least two to three sentences; be sure to use proper grammar. While I had a basic understanding of the women's suffrage movement, it recently surprised me to learn that there were women who were against the 19th Amendment. Growing up with strong female role models, I had always assumed that all women desired the opportunity to have a say in decisions that affected them. I hadn't considered how unfamiliar and daunting this concept might have been for women who had never envisioned themselves taking on responsibilities beyond the household. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 9 In one paragraph, explain which parts of your historical investigation and analysis were most interesting to you. Which parts were less interesting? Be sure to use proper grammar. During my historical investigation on Boston school desegregation, I found the personal stories and firsthand accounts of individuals involved in the desegregation struggle to be the most captivating. Listening to personal experiences of students, parents, and educators gave me a deeper understanding of the emotional toll and challenges they faced during this transformative period. Additionally, examining the legal and political aspects of the desegregation efforts provided valuable insights into the complex decision-making processes and the broader societal context. However, I found the statistical analysis and data interpretation less engaging as it involved a lot of numbers and graphs, which didn't resonate with me as much as the human stories did. Nevertheless, researching and analyzing Boston school desegregation was an enlightening and eye-opening experience overall.
