Hello Class, My name is Aisha, and I am an active-duty soldier in the Army. I have served eleven years and am stationed in Fort Irwin, California. When not working, I enjoy eating good food, reading, and caring for my hairless cat, Sypha. I believe that this course will help me become more aware of ageism, which is a topic that interests me, especially when it comes to caring for elderly parents. Being aware of ageism can positively impact my interactions with people of different age groups, personally and professionally. I have read the syllabus, course resource packet, and welcome announcement, and I understand the course policies, due dates, and requirements. For this week's discussion, I have chosen prompt number three. Ageism is a form of discrimination that occurs when someone is mistreated or prejudiced against when it references one's age. Ageism can take the form of stereotypes, biases, and negative attitudes towards people of a certain age. Ageism can manifest in various contexts, including the workplace, media, and societal perceptions. Recognizing and addressing ageism is crucial to ensure everyone receives equal treatment, regardless of age. Ageism is a prevalent form of discrimination in the United States. Older employees may face unfair treatment in the workplace, such as being denied promotions, overlooked for hiring, or forced into retirement based solely on their age. Ageist discrimination harms the affected individuals and deprives society of their valuable skills, knowledge, and experience. Negative stereotypes of older adults are often portrayed in the media, depicting them as feeble, forgetful, or incapable of keeping up with technology. These stereotypes reinforce societal biases and can lead to a continual lack of respect for older adults. I am guilty of age biases regarding elderly or more senior adults and driving. Whenever I am near an older person driving slowly on a fast highway, my annoyance shoots to an all-time high. Ageism is a harmful practice that has adverse effects on our society. It creates divisions based on age and weakens social companionship. By undervaluing older adults, ageism promotes a culture of exclusion, making it difficult for
people of different generations to connect and share their knowledge and experiences. Ageism also has economic implications as it limits opportunities for older adults in the workforce, affecting individuals and hampering economic growth and productivity.
