Greetings Class! For this week's discussion, I am choosing prompt number 1. Continuity theory and social constructionism are two social gerontological perspectives that aid in understanding aging in society. According to continuity theory, people will maintain their habits, preferences, and values throughout their aging process. Normal aging is a life that isn't affected by chronic diseases. Those who suffer from chronic illnesses such as Alzheimer's, cancer, or heart disease do not fall into this theory's approach. Continuity theory emphasizes that individuals are more likely to hold onto their beliefs, relationships, and societal roles instead of making drastic changes. For instance, an individual practicing Catholicism all their life will most likely continue to do so as they age rather than convert to another religion, such as Jehovah's Witness. Social constructionism argues that humans construct the world through social practices such as language, cultural norms, and shared meaning and understanding. These social practices help shape how individuals perceive and interpret the world. It argues that many concepts, categories, and phenomena are socially constructed, challenging the idea of their natural occurrence in human reality. The concept of gender is a well-known social construct. Individuals assume specific social roles, expectations, and behaviors based on their perceived gender. For example, these social practices often dictate that girls should conform to submissive behaviors, while boys are discouraged from expressing a submissive personality. These reinforced norms contribute to the preserved understanding of gender, shaping and limiting human expression. As an application in society, continuity theory can help us understand how individuals navigate their different life stages and choices based on their past experiences and values. It can explain why my older family members refuse to upgrade their older cell phones to the current technology. Instead, they would much rather maintain their accustomed practices. Social constructionism has had a significant impact on society. It has helped people understand social categories like race and sexuality. Most importantly, it shows how they affect the experiences and opportunities of individuals. Social constructionism has highlighted the conversation that race is not an existence of biology but a social construct used to create disparities in society. This perspective has created a domino effect of social movements that promote equality and challenge oppressive systems. Thank you for reading, Aisha
