COHP 101 Case Study Assignment COHP 101 - Case Study Assignment This assignment requires you to the knowledge gained throughout the course to analyze a case study patient scenario. Your case analysis must demonstrate an understanding of health policy, health care delivery methods, services and financing in the United States as it applies to the case scenario. The case study involves a geriatric patient and her health care. The analysis of the case must consider: Beliefs and Values of the patient, Ethical Consideration of care , Confidentiality , and Access and Quality of care as it relates to patient care in the context of the United State health delivery system. You are required to address the interconnections between individuals, groups and institutions/ agencies. You are to consider the impacts of social interaction between: 1. The patient and her relatives, 2. The patient and the health care professionals, 3. The various institutions and governmental agencies. Case Analysis Assignment Learning Objectives: Demonstrate an understanding of the COHP 101 materials, and apply to a case scenario by: 1. Defining and describing the interconnection between individuals, groups and institutions/agencies. 2. Describing how the health policies, health care delivery methods, applicable services and financing of those services relate to the case study scenario. 3. Describe proposed solutions to address the issues found in the case study. Case Scenario: The patient is a 72-year-old widowed Native American woman named Rose Smith. Mrs. Smith lives alone near Traverse City, Michigan. Her son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and their children all live outside of Michigan. Her income is $19,000 per year and her healthcare coverage is traditional Medicare (Parts A, B and D). She does not have access to a car. Mrs. Smith is diabetic and routinely receives care at the local health clinic. For hospital care she must travel to Traverse City. Mrs. Smith suffered a trip and fall accident resulting in a broken left hip. Surgical repair was necessary for the left hip, and was performed at Munson Medical Center, followed by a seven day inpatient stay. After Mrs. Smith’s inpatient stay, she was discharged to Munson Health and Rehabilitation for short-term rehabilitation stay of fourteen days . Upon discharge from Munson, in-home physical and occupational therapy visits were scheduled for a period of two months .

Describe institutional and/or government agencies that may be relevant to this patient’s medical care. * Think back to Question 1 and Question 2 and your description of the patient and her income level. Who would provide insurance coverage for her? 1. Mrs. Rose is a 72 year old woman of Native American descent. She’s a widow, doesn’t drive, her family is out of state. She makes 19,000 a year and is covered by medicare part A, B, and D. 2. She is diabetic and receives routine care for it. She fell and broke her hip recently, and had surgery to repair it. 3. Governmental agencies such as Medicare and Medicaid can help relieve some of the financial burdens that come with her condition. She is covered by parts A, B and D. Another way she can get help is through the ACA.

The injury will also take longer to heal due to her age and that she is a diabetic. She will have a harder time getting around as well without help. 5. She is below the poverty line and now has a bunch of bills and rehab costs as well. Medicare can help with this but can’t fully cover it so her income will make it harder for her to pay. 6. As a native american she may encounter prejudice from staff at both the hospital and rehab centers. This could be a struggle fro her because medicare/ insurance may judge her the same. 7. They have to help her no matter what because you can’t leave an elderly lady with a broken hip to walk around on it and make it worse. Even though she most likely can’t pay for it they will still have to help her.

Along with following her health care provider recommendations, she should not live alone. Either a child should move in with her or she should movie with one of them. If this is not possible then she should be put in a care home where she can be monitored but still live on her own. 9. She is using government aid to help cover the costs of her medical expenses and doesn’t have a car to get to appointments and back. She does not have full access to quality care due to not having transportation or money for it. 10. She would most likely benefit from talking to her family. Social interaction is dire especially since she lives alone. It is important for your mental health as well as physical health. She would also benefit from a family member living with her to help her get to her appointments and to get medical care in general. 11. Her health care providers could hold a prejudice against her which could affect the quality of her care.
