Report
Agency's Name: S.H.A.R.E. House (Someone Helping Another through Resources and Education). Mission: S.H.A.R.E. House is a non-profit organization providing crisis intervention and the continuum of care to address the causes and effects of family violence! (SHARE House, Inc. n.d.). Explanation of selected agency or organization. S.H.A.R.E. House was selected as my internship. I decided to explore outside of the medical field of social work and work with agencies/organizations within the community. I was not accustomed to working with a crisis intervention agency, so I wanted to be educated in this social service sector professionally and personally. I grew up seeing family members fight violently, and a few years ago, I had to assist my sister out of an abusive relationship. Therefore, participating and providing a needed support service to the survivors of intimate partner violence was an honor. Description of the related policy and the problem it addresses. The related policy passed by Congress was the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (V.A.W.A.) Title IV of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act, H.R. 3355, was written by Senator Joseph R. Biden (N.N.E.D.V., 2017; Library of Congress, 1994) and signed by President Bill Clinton (Library of Congress, 1994). It was the first federal legislation to acknowledge domestic/intimate partner violence and sexual assault as crimes (N.N.E.D.V., 2017). But it also provided federal resources to encourage communities to fight against domestic/intimate and family violence (N.N.E.D.V., 2017). Working with the U.S. Department of Justice and Health and Human Services, it is noted that there has been an increase in improvements in federal, tribal, state, and local responses to these offenses (N.N.E.D.V., 2017). V.A.W.A. provides survivors with local resources on programs, housing, legal assistance, alternatives to criminal responses, non-discriminatory laws, and services for L.G.B.T.Q., and holding non-Native perpetrators accountable. Every five years, V.A.W.A. goes up for renewal to find better programs to meet the needs of the survivors of D/I partners, families, and victims of violence (N.N.E.D.V., 2017). Explanation of the policy supporting the mission and the impact (positively or adversely) on the organization's clients. The Violence Against Women Act of 1994 supports the mission of the S.H.A.R.E. House because it provides crisis intervention to survivors/victims of violence. The effects and the cause of domestic violence are addressed within the agency through federal funding for partnerships and programs within the local community and state government agencies. Such as the Task Force for Domestic Violence in Georgia and the Georgia Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The social worker's shared goal of advocacy, empowerment, social justice, equity, and preservation of life for the survivors of violence while enhancing their well-being are needed services. This intervention will help clients get benefits they may not usually receive (Jansson,
2018). As a social worker in this social services sector, it is essential to continue raising awareness of Intimate Partners and Family violence within local communities and state and federal governments.
