The schism between Jane Addams and Mary Richmond and understanding the social work profession through policy advocacy and action. Jane Adams and Mary Richmond are a couple of great pioneers in social work. They have set the foundation for micro and macro practice in social work. Jane Adams worked more with macro practice in social work. She fought for policy reform within our government's local, state, and federal branches (Jansson, 2018). She wanted to see the needs of vulnerable communities met by providing proper housing, education, proper nutrition, and fair working conditions (Jansson, 2018). Jane Addams was about community building and development for the underserved. Mary Richmond looks at the individual and family and believes they must change their outlook or perspective within their environment. Her work focuses on the person in the environment and the significant challenges in that individual's or family's life. Mary Richmond focused more on case work with individuals and families using treatment theories and methods (Epple, 2007). Her method would be considered micro social work. Both of these pioneers' ideas were rooted in the betterment of society through their policy advocacy and action in social work practices. Similar schisms exist in contemporary social work. In today's society of contemporary social work, schisms still exist within the social work profession. There are debates about whether people with financial disadvantages stay disadvantaged because of individual choices or societal barriers. Some can say that many benefits can assist a person in obtaining resources for education, employment, or job training. Then, on the other hand, one can say there is not enough funding to meet the needs of those individuals in marginalized groups to obtain the resources needed to meet their basic needs, and to obtain resources, one's basic needs must be met first. No matter how a social work practitioner views it or preference of micro or macro, these obligations of mobilization, action, advocacy, planning, education, and development with specific goals, strategies, and methods- must be achieved within a community on the local, state, and federal levels of government (Gutierrez & Grant, 2018). Explanation of contemporary schisms that prevent social workers from fulfilling their ethical obligation(s). Contemporary schisms can prevent social work practitioners from fulfilling their ethical obligations due to them not following the National Association of Social Workers code of ethics of promoting to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people" (NASW, 2021). A social worker must fight for social justice and advocate for those individuals who are in marginalized groups. If the driving force for these subjects is not there, then as a social worker, one is not living up to the NASW code of ethics standards. References Epple, D. M. (2007).
