WK 3 DISCUSSION CHANGING LIVES 6002 Describe professional ethics and the purpose of the NASW code of ethics in your own words.       Professional ethics are a set of ethical principles and values that guide the conduct and behavior of professionals in their everyday practice. Professionals such as Social Workers, Doctors, Lawyers, and others must adhere to these ethics as they do their work. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has developed a comprehensive Code of Ethics that provides a framework for the ethical practice of social work. The Code of Ethics has six core values: service, social justice, dignity and worth, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence.       The NASW Code of Ethics equips social workers with clear guidelines and standards for ethical practice. It ensures that social workers carry out their professional responsibilities with respect, integrity, and professionalism. The Code of Ethics guides social workers in handling ethical dilemmas that may arise in their practice. It also requires social workers to maintain client confidentiality, obtain informed consent, and avoid conflicts of interest.  Explain the section of the code that you were assigned.      The NASW Code of Ethics requires social workers to create respectful relationships, ensure competent services, respect clients' autonomy and confidentiality, and promote well-being. Social workers must avoid conflicts of interest or exploitative behavior and prioritize fairness and respect in all client interactions.      Social workers are responsible for providing clients with a comprehensive and precise account of services, associated costs, potential risks, and benefits. Ensuring clients are equipped with such information is essential in allowing clients to make informed decisions. Moreover, social workers must prioritize their client's safety, taking necessary measures to ensure their well-being while providing services.      Social workers must be attentive to the cultural environment in which they offer their services and be conscious of any personal biases that may affect their work. This involves sensitivity to the client's cultural background, beliefs, values, and language.      Social workers must comply with these standards to guarantee their clients receive optimal care while maintaining respectful and supportive professional relationships. By adhering to these guidelines, social workers can ensure that their professional conduct reflects the highest standards of ethical and moral principles.
Describe the standards within that section in your own words.      The NASW's Code of Ethics is a comprehensive guide providing social workers with clear and detailed principles and standards. The code emphasizes the need for social workers to provide competent and ethical services that respect the rights of their clients and promote their overall well-being.      One of the critical aspects of the code is the importance of providing high-quality services. This means that social workers should strive to provide services that are effective, evidence- based, and tailored to the needs of each client. Social workers should also be mindful of the cultural context in which they work, considering the client's cultural background, beliefs, and values.      Another essential principle of the code is respecting clients' autonomy and right to self- determination. This means that social workers should involve clients in the decision-making process and ensure that they are fully informed about their options and the potential consequences of their choices.      The code also emphasizes the importance of protecting clients' privacy and confidentiality. Social workers should only share information about clients with others if it is necessary for providing services or with the client's explicit consent.      In addition, the code highlights the need to honor clients' decisions, even if they disagree with them. Social workers should also promote their clients' well-being and address any barriers preventing them from achieving their goals.      The code emphasizes the importance of fairness. Social workers should treat all clients respectfully and without discrimination or conflicts of interest and ensure that all clients have equal access to services and resources. Provide a specific example of how a social worker would apply these ethical standards.      To uphold ethical standards and empower clients to make informed decisions, social workers must be forthcoming and accurate in communicating their services' potential risks and benefits. Demonstrating professionalism and expertise in these communications is essential.       For example, as a mobile crisis counselor, my job involves several critical duties that enable me to support my clients effectively. One of my key responsibilities is to explain to my clients their rights under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which governs the disclosure of personal health information. This includes informing them about how their information is collected, used, and shared and the circumstances under which it may be disclosed to others.       In addition to providing this information, I also seek permission from my clients before disclosing any information to other healthcare providers or professionals involved in their care.
I understand the importance of maintaining the confidentiality and privacy of my client's information, and I always ensure their wishes are respected.      Another crucial aspect of my job is developing person-centered plans tailored to client's unique needs and goals. This involves engaging them in a collaborative process and considering their preferences and values while designing the care plan.       It is also my responsibility to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of my client's information at all times unless the client is at risk of harming themselves or others.      Ensuring the safety and well-being of my clients is of the utmost importance. I take proactive steps to identify potential risks and hazards and take necessary measures to mitigate them. I am always vigilant and responsive to any concerns or issues my clients may have, and I ensure they receive the care and support they need to thrive.
