Tamara Truett Walden University Role Play Essay November 5, 2023
We had the opportunity to practice social work skills by role playing. This essay will include my general thoughts on creating the role-playing video as well as my review of a colleague's role-playing video. The following points will be covered: “Explanation of any ideas you gain from the experience. Explain the challenges you faced when planning and implementing the role-playing game. Explain the specific techniques you used and why you used them. Briefly describe the role-playing video of the colleague you selected. A critique of what your colleague did well in the video you selected and an explanation of where your colleague could improve their approach and why (Waldenu.edu, 2016). The client I selected plays as a 26-year-old woman with three children under the age of 4. The client has limited family support and is at risk of job loss. The client has financial difficulties and has not received alimony from his partner. The client's and family's concerns are safety, finances, childcare, housing, and family well-being. The agency used is "Offering Helping Hands". The agency offers services to mothers who needs support. The variety of services include rental assistance, counseling, women's empowerment groups, babysitting and daycare assistance. The agency is developing a way where the outcome doesn’t result in DHR. I used the GIM model during the engagement phase. The perfect steps I used include greeting the client warmly, using effective engagement skills, discussing office services, offering services, and completing paperwork. Engagement - The client stated at the scene that she was stressed because she didn’t have the funds to pay for her children's daycare due to nonpayment of the father. As the client was speaking to me, I gave clear eye contact with her to show her I was observative. I also used the paraphrase skill to summarize some of the things she was speaking to me about; so that she can see that I am an alert. Planning and execution - I was able to sort out a plan to help the client have a clear vision and could move forward. To implement the plan, I asked the client
if she had a friend or family member, she could talk to be there for her. I also included recommendations to ensure that the plan doesn’t fail. The client was sitting in an upright position, and she looked calm. I was able to create eye contact and nonverbal communication such as head movement to communicate with the client. After the session, the client felt well knowledgeable. The client was impressed with the session and was ready to start her plan. Completing this project allowed me the opportunity to act in the role of a social worker. Seeing firsthand the amount of preparation needed to create the video provided an insight of the level of complexity a social worker encounter. “Role playing refers to having a person assume. a different role or part than the one he or she would normally assume. The intent is usually to help people see how they are perceived (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2015).” By recording and reviewing the role play video one was able to analyze how they would be perceived by a client. Overall, the video was satisfactory, and successfully demonstrated compassion, friendliness, eye contact, empathy, concern, competence, engagement, and assessment skills. However, there is room for improvement. “The major goal of any interview is effective. communication with the client. The colleague I chose was Tynisha Acosta. She was the social worker of the client Judy, age 76, that was being admitted to an inpatient hospice care center. Her son and grandson are her only family. The social worker (Tynisha) was calm and engaged, very communicative and above all very cooperative during the role play. She makes the scene look natural and realistic with her calm voice. Tynisha followed the script, which wasn't always easy to do, she went off

track many times during the role; however, she was able to reprise her role and reconnect with the storyline. Tynisha also helped me describe my role and skills as a social worker by staying on track, answering questions, and providing all the information needed to meet the client needs her with available resources. It's hard to find areas for improvement when watching videos. I know this role was played very well by Tynisha. Sometimes it is necessary to be as natural as possible when participating in a role-playing situation and to be tough with the role-playing game you are given. In doing so, social workers will need to be more reflective and engaged by using a wider range of skills to reveal skills and knowledge in their social worker role.
