Describe the advocacy in which you engaged this term. During the term, I have advocated for and assisted others in many ways. I have advocated by advising and providing guidance for several soldiers preparing to transition from the military to civilian life. These soldiers are very anxious about their future and afraid of the unknown. As a granddaughter of a veteran who recently transitioned, I am using my experience and the wealth of knowledge I gained during my grandfather transition to help others in their journey. Yesterday a soldier reached out to my grandfather for advice about applying for jobs, applying for disability benefits, and potential training that he may take advantage of to prepare for the civilian job market. I work at the Department of Veteran Affairs; I have knowledge of different resources to help veterans. I offered him contact information. I also gave him information on a resource where he can have his resume prepared for free through “Hire our heroes.” I also informed him about several internships and fellowship opportunities, such as American Corporate Partners and Skill bridge program, that he could also take advantage of.I also participated in preparing boxes of food to assist the homeless with my sorority. Explain how the concepts from this week’s resources apply to the act of advocacy in which you engaged. This week’s resources apply to the act of advocacy as I used the means of my experiences and knowledge as the most effective way to bring about change to veterans and the homeless population in my community. According to (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018), advocacy “Can be done by an individual acting alone or in concert with others”. I volunteered with my Sorority Chapter (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.) to feed the homeless in our community. Describe potential risks that you considered or that may exist for a social worker who serves as an advocate. Potential risks that may exist for a social worker who serves as an advocate is that of “persuading others to take certain actions can be simple or difficult” (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018, p. 558). A social worker can offer all the resources and information that exists, but if the client does not want to be helped, nothing the social worker can do. On the other hand, if the client is willing and enthusiastic about change, then the process can be very easy to bring about positive change. References Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. J. H. (2018).
