1 Connecting with a Client: Self-Disclosure and Cultural Competence Lauren Exinia Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6111: Advanced SW Practice I Dr. Folusho Otuyelu September 6, 2023
2 Define self-disclosure and explain the potential ramifications of deciding to self-disclose with a client. Use an example from field experience or professional life that illustrates the positive or negative effects of self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is sharing personal information. In therapy, it means the therapist shares their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with the client. Self-disclosure can build trust and connection between therapist and client, but it has risks. Self-disclosure can normalize client experiences. Some therapists disclose their personal anxiety struggles and how they overcome them to give clients hope. However, improper self- disclosure might have detrimental effects. It may shift focus from client to therapist or blur professional boundaries. Perhaps the biggest ethical concern related to self-disclosure surrounds the issue of boundaries ( Szczygiel, 2020) .   My social work field experience showed me the pros and cons of self-disclosure. A colleague recounted her anguish after losing a loved one. This disclosure helped the client understand and accept their loss. In another case, a colleague revealed too much about their personal lives, confusing and upsetting the client. A therapist should maintain boundaries and avoid therapeutic self-disclosure that overshadows the client's demands. Unmanaged self- disclosure can also cause countertransference or boundary violations. In conclusion, self-disclosure in therapy can be good or bad depending on its goal. A therapist should carefully evaluate the situation at hand, the probable impact on the clinical relationship, and the likelihood that the disclosure will be helpful (or not) for the particular client (Urdang, 2010, as cited in Szczygiel, 2020).
3 Describe the importance of cultural competence in client interactions. Use an example from field experience or professional life that illustrates how cultural competence is demonstrated in practice. Social workers shall possess and continue to develop specialized knowledge and understanding that is inclusive of, but not limited to, the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expressions such as race and ethnicity; immigration and refugee status; tribal groups … (NASW, 2015). Professionals must be culturally aware to work with various clients. It requires respecting and understanding diverse cultures' values, beliefs, and customs (NASW, 2021). Cultural awareness allows professionals to deliver sensitive care that meets the needs of clients. As a social worker, I have met Native American clients with deep ties to their heritage who were hesitant to talk to me due to negative experiences with colleagues. I started conversations by asking about a culturally significant item in their house or on their person and its origins. I asked questions when I didn't understand, showing I was listening and that I cared. It made the client feel accepted and understood. Cultural awareness transcends all boundaries. Understanding nonverbal clues and how different cultures express feelings and seek aid is also part of it (NASW, 2015). In certain cultures, direct eye contact is impolite or intrusive. Knowing these subtleties helps professionals build trust and rapport with clients. Finally, cultural awareness helps professionals and varied clients communicate and understand one another. My field experience shows how cultural awareness can overcome hurdles and guarantee clients receive treatment while feeling respected and valued.
