1 Termination Kimberly Smith Bachelor of Social Work, Walden University SOCW-4003 October 01, 2023
2 Termination When I was growing up, I dealt with abusive drug addict parents. This resulted in lots of traumas. When I was in the sixth grade my school brought in a social worker to talk to me. She was an older lady, and she was very warm. She gave off the feeling of a grandmother almost. She made me feel listened to and this allowed me to open. She comes to see me every Tuesday. I got to where I looked forward to her visit. We visited together until the middle of seventh grade and then she quit coming. At first, I was very sad that I wouldn’t have her to talk to anymore. But as time went on, I was grateful that I had been able to share some time with her. She gave me an idea of what a safe adult looked like. She also helped me learn some coping mechanisms that I still use today. As a social worker, I am sure I will deal with this same type of situation. I will get close to a client and then something will change, and I won’t see the client again. Social workers must have knowledge and skill in two areas termination and follow up Kirst-Ashman & Hull 2017. Having these two skills will help deal with the feelings that will arise. Even when a termination is planned or not it is important to make sure the client is well equipped to move on to the next step in their plan. One way to do this is to make sure the client is still receiving the support that is needed to reach their goals. According to (Department of Social Work 2022) “Social workers should assist in making appropriate arrangements for continuation of services when necessary". Also, according to (Kirst-Ashman & Hull 2017) “Social workers should take reasonable steps to avoid abandoning clients who are still in need of
3 services”. Clients should always be aware of what is going on with their case. They should also be in the loop of any and all changes. It is important to always keep a professional relationship with all clients. Termination of services will be a difficult thing for both sides. There will need to be continued support for the client to make sure they continue to progress and reach their goals lined out in the case plan.
