2 Explain the central concepts of the empowerment model There are many different types of approaches a social worker can use with their clients. A good one is the empowerment model. The central concept of this model is focusing on the good rather than the bad. It can also challenge a social worker to address the deeper challengings with their clients. This model does not so much work on the person but the relationships they may have. Really starting at the base of an individual. This model can help remove any social boundaries that one may have. Allowing them to get the support and the resources that they may need. An example of a group that may benefit from this type of model is the LGBTQ+ community. This model can help them by advocating for their rights. As well as preventing any stigmatization that people may have against the LGBTQ+ community. The empowerment model is a good way for someone to make change. For example, let’s say that an individual is having a hard time with social norms. Well, the individual would want to take an inside. Look into what may be causing this issue. This model is creating power for individuals to speak up for themselves and to get to the bottom of their issues. Our society has many issues, other than just discrimination. Therefore, I think this model is awesome for those who may be struggling. A way to put this model into action would be first identifying the objective. Then step two would be knowing why achieving the goal is important. Lastly you would want to continue what you’re trying to achieve and your future goals. Let’s say you have a client who is part of the LGBTQ plus community, and they are struggling with coming out and people accepting them. What could be done is looking at the deeper route as to why they are worried that people will
3 judge. What you could do as a social worker could be advocating for the LGBTQ plus committee. You could attend the peaceful protest or march as an ally for the LGBTQ plus community. Describe how this concept is applied in social work practice. This type of model can be good for social workers. It can challenge social workers themselves. To look deep within themselves to understand any issues. This concept is also a great thing for a social worker to do with their clients. A social worker can help their clients identify any issues they may have. Empowerment theory social work can create opportunities for advocacy that address social, economic and political inequalities. Cj esse. (2023, January 26). In the social work field it is important to bring awareness, and with that comes the territory of doing interventions. There are many different kinds of interventions that can be done. Some examples include doing therapy, case management and insight techniques. There are also macro level tools that can also help. Some examples of those could be program development, research projects and political advocacy. Political advocacy engages government agencies in efforts to change laws and policies that disproportionately impact marginalized or disadvantaged groups in negative ways. Cjesse (2023, January 26). As a social worker you can do so much to advocate for your clients. Attending peaceful protests is a good way to start. As well as talking to your local mayor to see if there is anything you can do. Research projects can identify factors that contribute to social inequities or measure the effects of discrimination and other oppressive forces on specific populations, providing data that

4 informs evidence-based practices. Cjesse (2023 January 26). As a social worker you could do your research on any type of issue that your client may be having. Explain why this approach might be beneficial to clients. I think that this theory is good for clients. It can allow them to better understand themselves. As well as finding the resources that they may need. In better terms it can help clients better control their lives. With the assistance of a social worker and or a therapist. This can allow the clients to have power in terms of making any changes that they see fit. Like how I talked about in the previous conversation the clients can do things called macro tools. The client can do research on anything that they need more information on. As well as talking to their local mayor to make changes. A Lot of the time people can feel lost when they don’t have the right support that they may need. If a client goes the therapist route they may have to do some trauma intervention. Also known as cognitive based therapy. Cognitive therapy is a talk therapy that has many benefits. I actually think it goes well for this model. Social workers can help their clients by having them continue the beliefs that they have. Another way a client can help themselves is talking to others about their issues so they do not feel alone. In conclusion, the empowerment model can be helpful in many ways. You just have to know how to use it for yourself and or your clients. This is my first time learning about the empowerment model. I will definitely use it once I become a social worker. Even as a social worker I think this can be useful. You can look deep in and figure out any issues that you may have. As well as getting help for yourself, just like how you would advise your clients.
