Lucia Ellis 3/9/2023 Task 1 A. 1.   My family’s expectations for education when I was growing up was to learn as much as possible. My father did not complete high school and he wanted better for us. My mother was a college graduate and taught middle school for 18 years. School was the most important aspect of our childhood and it circled around my love for books and reading. My love for learning influenced my personal culture by pushing me and my siblings to read at a much higher level than our fellow classmates. My personal culture and expectations of education will influence me as an educator working with culturally diverse students because I value education and learning for all. I will be effective in the classroom by helping students break through personal barriers and cultural differences. 2.   My values about social groups are lackluster. I personally did not take interest in social groups because I was very awkward in a social setting. Growing up, I felt that social groups were a popularity contest and I never felt comfortable, so I preferred to stay inside and read. My values about family were close to my heart. My family valued fondness and staying in together. We were not an outgoing family and it later affected my personal culture, I stay home mostly, hardly going out because I did not place high value in social groups or settings growing up. Now that I am older, I value social groups differently and it will impact my effectiveness as an educator working with culturally diverse students. My values of family and social groups has changed and I know for a student to feel confident and successful, they need support and being in a social club or involved with sports can help a child blossom. 3. My personal and professional experiences with individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds run hand in hand with each other. My family was the only white family in my neighborhood and we were some of the few white children in our school too. I grew up surrounded by Hispanic, Black, and Asian cultures and never once felt out of place. I took in different cultures daily and did not really see them as any different from my personal culture. My professional experience is nearly the same, I am one of two white women working in a center of Hispanic women. I work with many culturally diverse backgrounds and it makes me more relatable to others. These interactions have shaped me to be an effective educator for a diverse group of students by being more understanding of cultures and unique family dynamics.   B.  1.  I chose the Middle/High School Case Study. a.  Hannah’s characteristic is her responsibility to her family. Hannah is having to step up and be more mature in order to tend to her two younger siblings and grandmother. This extra responsibility as a care giver has affected her learning. Hannah cannot spend time reading or participating in after school activities that could help her with her studies because of the additional obligations. b.  Hannah’s family factor impacts her daily. Hannah has to care for her siblings and grandmother while her dad is out of state and her mom is working two jobs. It affects her life by not allowing her to place her full attention on the subject of struggle, reading, thus affecting her learning. Hannah gets frustrated by her family responsibilities and shuts down, leaving her little time to improve her handwriting and reading comprehension and understanding. c. A teacher can utilize equity pedagogy to support Hannah’s learning by pulling bilingual and culturally relevant materials into her reading list. The addition of bilingual readings can make Hannah feel more engaged and connected to her learning. Bilingual material can better help Hannah with word recognition. This can increase her chances of academic progress and success.
