Task 4: Professional Response A. I chose the scenario based on Anthony. Anthony is facing issues with neglect at home (including food insecurity and hygiene) and forming relationships with his peers. B. 1) As a teacher, it is my responsibility to respond to Anthony’s situation in a manner that is sensitive and culturally responsive. To address the neglect that Anthony is experiencing at home, I would first address his food insecurity by making sure that I have snacks and water on hand that Anthony can have access to at different times throughout the day. If he is no longer insecure about mealtime and feel he is forced to take from others, it would help to improve his attention and repair his relationships with his peers. I would also reach out to administration and local food and clothing drives to ensure that Anthony has extra food to bring home and clean clothes when he is in school. In order to address Anthony’s issues with forming relationships with his peers, specifically his inability to participate effectively in group activities, I would be sure to model and reinforce appropriate interactions by encouraging active listening and personal space, while giving substantial breaks for movement and offering hands on activities to keep the children engaged. In addition, building a personal relationship with Anthony and making a meaningful connection to him would help him to trust in me as his teacher and confidant. 2) As a teacher, it is my legal obligation to report suspicion of neglect that is present in any student. The fact that Anthony is left alone for hours and often comes to school unkept and hungry shows that he is being neglected at home. When addressing his hunger and hygiene by reaching out to shelters and making food available to Anthony throughout the day, it is important to remember to adhere to the standards of confidentiality by not disclosing any of Anthony’s personal information to the organizations I have reached out to. “Confidentiality refers to your obligation not to disclose or transmit information to unauthorized parties. Confidentiality extends to information about either individuals or organizations” (National Center for Education Statistics). 3) A way to collaborate with Anthony’s caregiver to address his identified issues would be to first build a relationship with his caregiver. Forming a relationship with Anthony’s mother would model appropriate peer-to-peer relationships and communication for Anthony, while simultaneously building trust between teacher and family. A strategy I would use to support this attempt would be the suggestion of a community walk with Anthony and his family. During this community walk, I would be able to identify different
community resources for the family that they would be able to use to address their issues such as food insecurity and hygiene troubles. It would also be a convenient time to observe Anthony’s behaviors with siblings and other community members and bring up concerns about his social development based on observations. 4) In education, it takes the effort and expertise of many different stakeholders to aid a child. Other school stakeholders that should be involved in addressing Anthony’s identified issues would be a school counselor and psychologist. The role of the school counselor and psychologist would be to “understand child abuse and neglect and its impact on children’s social/emotional, physical and mental well-being, provide interventions that promote resiliency, healthy interpersonal and communication skills and self- worth, make referrals to outside agencies for child or family support when appropriate, and engage families in the school community” (The School Counselor and Child Abuse Neglect Prevention). Additional supports for Anthony would foster communication and connection and give him the opportunity to trust the adults around him, while also giving him access to the physical and emotional supports that he needs.
