Report
Post a brief summary of the case study, including a description of the impact of the crisis on the individual. Jenna and Wilma live on a farmette in North Carolina, which is a life they dreamed of having (Walden University, 2023). During hurricane season, the couple was given evacuation orders due to the storm and potential for flooding (Walden University, 2023). The couple disagreed on whether to evacuate, but chose to stay and move their farm animals to lofts and higher ground in an attempt to keep them safe (Walden University, 2023). Their dog ran away and they did not find her, some animals died, their farm land was decimated, and their first floor furniture and belongings were destroyed (Walden University, 2023). The aftermath left Wilma angry, Jenna shocked, and the couple with a need to address multiple challenges post hurricane (Walden University, 2023). Then, describe how a social worker could respond to help the individual. When a natural disaster strikes, there are multiple ways social workers can respond to help the individual or families involved. A social worker in a case like this would assess the various needs of the individual in the aftermath of the natural disaster. The ACT model may be a helpful framework as it assesses needs, helps individuals deal with their feelings and create a plan, and provides follow-up care if needed (James & Gilliland, 2017). For Wilma and Jenna, this would mean helping them cope with their shock, anger, grief, and any other emotions that come about as the result of the trauma. Additionally, they may need assistance filing insurance claims, obtaining new furniture, getting food and clean water for themselves and their animals, and creating a plan for their farmland going forward. Finally, briefly describe a personal example of crisis, trauma, or disaster, and explain the impact it has had on you and others. You can also connect this to your role as a social worker. Until this assignment, I never intentionally sat and thought about the trauma or disasters I have experienced, and never realized how much trauma I had experienced on a personal and secondhand level. The trauma that affected me the most was when I was raped in college and was further victimized by the system after reporting what happened. Apparently, what happened to me is common enough that Neflix has a documentary called Victim/Suspect which is similar to what I went through. I wound up graduating early, left my sorority and friends without saying bye, and have never returned to Pittsburgh despite how much I loved it. The situation affected myrelationships and intimacy, and it took me a long time to get help/stop blaming myself. When I finally attended therapy and learned coping strategies, I also came to terms with the fact that it was not my fault.
This is something I carry with me in my current job working with kids in the foster care system. Many also blame themselves and no matter how many times they are told what happened is not their fault, they need to process their trauma before they believe they are not responsible for anything that happened for them to be placed in care. One day, I would like to work with sexual assault survivors running a support group and providing individual treatment. I would also like to advocate toward tougher sentences for rapists and changing how survivors are treated by law enforcement so other survivors do not have to go through what I, and many others, did.
