Module 12 In competency 7, we assessed individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities. We developed an understanding of how trauma history impacts the assessment process. We practiced trauma-informed care principles as part of assessment with diverse families and other populations. We spent time with working with clients in the community, clients who have multiple problems and were sensitive to their needs and be sensitive to their background stories. Specifically, this week, we visited the child advocacy center and got to shadow the social workers there. There were children there who witnessed their mother get shot by their father. It was a very traumatic event for them, and they are mandated to follow up with therapeutic services. At the child advocacy center, they work with investigators and the involved police department to interview the children. There is protocol on how they are to go about the interviews. They are to work around being able for the child to tell them the information, they cannot assume anything. It was an interesting assessment to witness. Fortunately, for these children, their mother did survive. This was a challenge for me as it was a completely different environment then inpatient. I was fortunate to shadow a veteran Social Worker in the department. I believe the psychodynamic theory was the best practice framework that supported what I experienced. We examined how their experience played a role in influencing their behavior today. Two strengths I observed this week, was being able to observe a completely different type of social work than I am used to in the hospital. Another strength I experienced was being able to assist the CAC Social Worker with the situation along with documentation and be able to learn other departments procedures.
