2 Two potential policy alternatives to address poverty in America include increasing the federal minimum wage and improving the nation's present low-income programs. Among the various government assistance programs that should be improved are Medicaid, Affordable Housing, and SNAP. The amount of money that people can get will rise as a result of increased SNAP benefits. The needed minimum household gross income must be lowered for this to occur. There are several ways to improve Medicaid. Increasing the amount paid to providers should be the priority. The second is increasing healthcare access, and the third is increasing coverage. The AMA has previously discussed how to approach increasing healthcare access and coverage. The AMA collaborates with federal and state agencies to enhance Medicaid initiatives. In order to promote physical involvement and streamline enrollment, ensure audit procedures, and enhance managed care programs, they want to increase access by collaborating with state advocates to properly finance the Medicaid program (American Medical Association. n.d.). The AMA supports expansion plans that best serve the interests of those with limited incomes, states, and advocates by collaborating with legislators at all levels of government to discover workable choices for uninsured individuals to obtain coverage (American Medical Association. n.d.). Working with the federal government to increase the amount of approved funds and housing vouchers will help enhance public housing (Pennsylvania Legal Aid Network. 2023). Modifying the federal minimum wage is the second policy option. A wage increase would be an investment in workers that, for some of the lowest paid, may change their lives by giving them a source of additional money to help stabilize their finances. Presently, laws such as the "Raise the Wager Act of 2021" support workers who are women, African American and Latino (Nadeau, S. N. A., 2023). It is the responsibility of federal and state legislators to increase the minimum wage in order to foster greater economic equity and stability for workers as well as a more sustainable

3 and equitable means of advancing the economy. ( Nadeau, S. N. A., 2023 ). By lowering the rate of poverty in America, these adjustments would provide the low-income population with several opportunities. By making these policy improvements, the number of homeless people would go down, more Americans would be able to afford quality healthcare, they would have access to wholesome meals, and they would have more money to live more stable lives. There will be more people with roofs over their heads. There won't be a need to admit more people to hospitals due to malnutrition. More people will have access to healthcare, potentially preventing more serious illnesses. There will be more people who can afford to live lower crime rates in the communities. Each of these instances contributes to people's capacity to prosper in their local communities. Numerous societal issues, such as the high prevalence of crime, are influenced by poverty in the United States. Poverty is a major factor in the criminal activity of many people, according to a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice, low educational attainment, high unemployment rates, female-headed households, and a large percentage of families with lower incomes were all associated with higher rates of crime and poverty (U.S. Department of Justice, n.d.). The rates of property and violent crime are strongly connected with families that are below the poverty line (U.S. Department of Justice, n.d.). These kinds of social concerns can be reduced with the strengthening of low-income assistance programs and the increase of the federal minimum wage. There are numerous methods in which the impacted population might become involved. Those affected by the situation might take part in the battle for economic stability by supporting causes and participating in elections. Americans may push Congress to support this policy reform, as can those elected to government, since it aims to raise the minimum wage and

4 improve the existing established low-income programs. The poor typically don't have the resources to voice up. They just do not have the same access to resources as the general public. The quickest and most convenient way to inform this group is through the media. Elections are advertised in advertisements, SMS, mailers, and other media. As technology has developed throughout time, more inventive methods of capturing Americans' attention have emerged. To address the issues, gatherings for marches and rallies can be planned. If these events are publicized, attending them is simple. It is also crucial—though challenging given the stigma—to involve the other classes. Supporting issues makes them more well-known, encourages conversation, and draws attention to them. Because people are readily swayed, elections can be utilized to promote economic stability by using the media as a tool to raise awareness of the issue. Constructing a quiet environment is another method of involving the public. Their capacity to lessen, cope with, and recover can be strengthened by poverty. They can adjust to long-term changes by developing their quiet. These anti-poverty measures lessen the degree of susceptibility that communities may have when confronted with hazards. The increased minimum wage and anti-poverty initiatives are how the policy change is put into practice. The first step in putting the change into action is to recognize that it is necessary—in this example, to lower poverty in America. The next step is to create a plan, which in this case is to raise the federal minimum wage and enhance low-income programs like Medicaid, Public Housing and SNAP. The plan must then be put into action. It is necessary to determine the funds for both the program enhancements and the federal minimum wage hike and if it should be tackled at a federal or state level. Analyzing the outcomes is the last step. Enforcing the policies is the responsibility of the federal government. All identities and groups

5 will be involved in developing solutions and endorsing the policy change in order to put it into effect. Raising the federal minimum wage and enhancing these programs come with significant drawbacks. Raising the minimum wage will make hiring low-skilled workers more expensive, which will reduce overall employment opportunities. Additionally, it can result in automation and higher costs for goods and services. Increased labor expenses can hurt profits, which is particularly true for small business owners. Under a reduced minimum wage, some firms would have to hire fewer employees than they already do. We have financial difficulties when trying to enhance some of the previously listed services, such as Medicaid, Public Housing, and SNAP. Initiatives like taxing the wealthy and advancing economic equality can help fund the improvements. Taxing the wealthy has advantages, but it also has drawbacks. We can take money from people who don't need it. There will be a decrease in societal wealth, which may result in less money being invested, paid less, and a poorer level of living. Overall wealth will drop, which could be detrimental to the economy as a whole.
