HUNGER GAMES Qualitative Data Analysis – Hunger Games Evan Neal Our Lady of the Lake University SOWK 6347
QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS – HUNGER GAMES Introduction The Hunger Games is a film about two teens are selected via lottery from twelve districts in Panem to participate in a reality television show that televise a brutal and deadly gladiatorial royal death match. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins displayed many themes throuhout the film. Some themes may include appearances, celebrity culture and violence; however, the three themes that emerged while watching The Hunger Games are societal inequality, division and control, and exploitation. Societal Inequality In the film, the Capitol holds majority of Panem’s wealth which allows them to control the people in all of the districts throughout Panem. Like most totalitarian government, the Capitol of Panem stays in power by using military force. The Capitol uses peacekeepers to patrol the districts and use violence to limit the disadvantage people when necessary. For example, when the fight broke out in District 11, the Capitol Peacekeepers were quick to stop the violence that was uprising which threatens their supply of grain. The Capitol created the tesserae system which allowed the people in the Capitol to remain wealthy and prosperous while the other districts endure great hardship and poverty. In theory, the people believed that the reaping is selected randomly. However, the poor were more than likely to be tributes than the rich. Due to the food storage in the poorer districts, the people would enter their names into the reaping more frequent for an exchange of extra portions of food and oil known as the tesserae system. Majority of the poor families had to subject to tesserae to survive which cause them to input more entries and the wealthier families having to input fewer entries because they did not need tesserae. The poorer districts even broke the law in order to hunt for food just to feed their families. However, the rich who do become tributes tend to have an additional advantage, because they are often trained to take part in the Games and sometimes would volunteer to do so. The rich were also more likely to gain sponsors who provided food, water, and healing kits during the tournament. This also shows that the disadvantages of being underprivileged followed the poor even after they left their initial circumstances behind. Division and Control The authorities within the the Capitol maintain their positions of power via wealth, fear, and rivalry. All the districts of Panem were kept under variable degrees of poverty and are routinely rutted against each other in the form of the Hunger Games. The film displayed how corrupt the totalitarian government, the Capitol, is to the other districts. The people of Panem were subjected to brutal and repressive regime from the Capitol. The district had strict laws that inflicted into making life difficult. The wealthier districts have an advantage over the poorer districts. It was very difficult for the poorer districts to manage life and feed stock while individuals who live in the capitol lived a worry-free. The poorer districts were not allowed to contact one another and had no access to information about the other districts than what is provided by the authorities. Peacemakers were used to punish those who rebel and did not hesitate to exercise their power over the people from the poorer districts. The capitol of Panem used tributes from each district to 2
QUALITATIVE DATA ANALYSIS – HUNGER GAMES viciously execute each other off as a way to prevent the people of the poorer districts from plotting together and rebelling. The Capitol viewed the poorer citizens of Panem as pawns in an intricate game of life or death. Exploitation The film displayed the division amongst the societies. Due to the wealthy individuals living in the Capitol city; they maintained control over the outlying districts. The Capitol would manufactured resource shortages and display violent acts by conducting the Hunger Games tournament. War in Panem, whether it is actual war or brutal psychological stress, has caused the poor standard of living and the deterioration of previously respected individuals. Because of this, the poorer districts suffer from starvation, poverty and having to live to survive. These districts continue to be exploited and see little reward for their hard work despite their contributions to majority of Panem’s food and resources. The Capitol capitalizes the Hunger Games via mass entertainment. Viewers are drawn to the tournament because of the voyeurism, the children fighting and dying to be the last person standing and win for their district. The tournament went through many phases from build up to the tournament, gaining sponsorships for food and medical needs, and the game facilitators creating obstacles throughout the game or within the finale to create better entertainment. Reflections Grinnell & Unrau states that worldview are formed as a result of own cultural experiences. Worldview helps create perceptions to select, organize, and interpret a variety of external stimuli, including the communication that others direct toward us (Grinnell & Unrau, 2019). My worldview has shaped my interpretation and analysis because of the environment I was raise in. I was raise in what would be considered as a poverty area. My parents were young and uneducated with five children. My mom was a stay at home parent and dad would work extreme hours to ensure the bills were paid and the family had everything they needed. At times, we experience things getting cut off like, water, gas, lights and maybe did not have enough food to eat. However, those struggles molded me and my siblings to the person we have become today. Although, there are negative obstacles I experience, but I try to gain a positive outcome from that situation. My worldview influences the themes that I identified within the film because of experiencing social injustice, poverty, starvation and survival. Having to adapt to your environment, but yet hope for change and survive another day. Qualitative research can be defined as the study of the nature of phenomena and is especially appropriate for answering questions of why something is (not) observed, assessing complex multi-component interventions, and focusing on intervention improvement (Busetto et al., 2020). The thoughts I have about qualitative research in practice is if it is well conducted qualitative research can answer specific research questions that cannot be adequately answered using only quantitative designs. It allows the researchers to seek uncovered opinions, thoughts and feelings of the participants and help shape new concepts, theories and products. 3
