SEMINAR NOTES ~ Seminar #2 1) Consider the issue of immigration and displacement (i.e., refugees). In your role as President of Alphaland, use the Pastoral Circle to analyze this issue and decide on appropriate action(s). Discuss your analysis for each stage of the Pastoral Circle. Use the information included in the case study. You may also use other information you know/have about immigration and displacement. a. Stage 1: Involvement b. Stage 2: Exploration c. Stage 3: Reflection d. Stage 4: Action INVOLVEMENT: I am connected to this injustice because I am the President of Alphaland, my role is to protect Alphaland, its citizens and to build up the economy financially. Any growing concerns in our Country are brought up to my attention and my duty is to keep the Country peaceful. The protests performed by Alphaland people are pro-refugee and anti-refugee and both have gathered concerns in my Country, it’s in a refugee crisis therefore, actions need to be taken. Seeing my people suffer and being unsatisfied upsets me, and the Rastia refugees with no food, home and shelter shatters my heart. EXPLORATION: Alphaland values are neutral, the people are compassionate and kind and the people are pro peacemaking efforts. Looking into the issues of letting the Rastia refugee’s in versus not letting them in, also looking into the consequences of the injustice, people dying, people washed away in the ocean and people dying in fields because of this civil war. Understanding what caused the injustice (civil war). The injustice is thousands of Rastia refugee’s area fleeing their homes because of a civil war, and people are dying. There are issues of public safety and it became difficult to identify the refugee’s. Looking at it in a different perspective, Rastia refugees are fleeing their Country because of violence, and looking to improve their lives. Looking at Baum’s Social Sin, If I don’t take action it will leave evil consequences with Alphaland and the Rastia refugee’s, and I can’t allow the injustice to dehumanize the people. REFLECTION: Societal values and community outlook are growing voices, some are pro- refugee and others are anti-refugee, Alphaland immigration, health, and social service are unable to keep up with the massive volume of Rastia refugee’s. Looking at it through my lens, refugees are fleeing their Country, death and civil war. Society values the Charter Rights and Freedom, protecting the vulnerable and some of the community values and faith. ACTION: In this case, I would recommend extra money to our agencies to help process the refugee acceptance into our country. I would dedicate a certain area for the refuges to reside in, also I will cap the amount of Rastia refugees entering the country, so we don’t harm our economic growth. A cap that’s suitable for my Country to sustain, approximately 25,000. Also, I will consider an action plan with United Nations and the 1
neighboring Countries to stop the crisis in Rastia in hopes for its citizens to go back. 2) Why did you decide on these actions regarding the refugee crisis? What elements of your moralscape are influencing your decision (see Kammer article)? Discuss. When deciding on my actions, I referred to my moralscape which included, worldview, prejudice, values and norms and loyalties. When looking at worldview, I’m not only looking at my country, I’m also considered fixing Rastia and working with the neighboring countries to make it better. When I looked into prejudice, I did not want to prejudge the Rastia refugees(criminals/terrorists), this is a crisis and I needed to remain my thoughts open. When my reflection came to values and norms, I thought about death and the Rastia refugees are fleeing from their country and if I deny entry I could effect their life, so I valued their life as well. My loyalties are to help people and not leave them stranded, some are faced with challenges (Rastia refugees) and god reminds me to help people that are in need therefore the Rastia refugees are in need of help, and I will do the best of my ability to help them. 3) Are the action(s) you decided on an example of direct service, or social analysis and action? Why? Please respond for each action/decision. My actions are examples of both direct and social analysis. My objective is to help the people who are in crisis therefore I wanted to organize a refugee camp, where the people have food, shelter and water. Alphaland people are compassionate and kind therefore the people will strive to assist and save a human life. My decision also reflects social analysis because I want to fix the crisis, I want neighboring countries and United Nation to fix the problem in Rastia, this would eliminate the refugees from fleeing. 4) What is a ‘just’ society? What alignments, if any, do you see between your ideas and the perspectives of the Eastern and Western religions discussed at class? When I think of just society, I think of a fairness, fundamental rights, charter of rights, living in a country with equality and opportunity. Distributive justice is also import part of just society, there needs to be resources available to sustain basic life needs, such as food, shelter, clothing and water. Just society is when people comply with the morals and ethics of the majority population, instead of the smaller class of people. I can relate my ideas to just society and Islam, I agree with a person to have good morals, a structured system and guidance to implement a fair government, and to allow fairness in an economic status.
