Applying Conflict Theory: Research-Theory Link 1. What are the primary research questions / hypotheses in this article and how do they relate to conflict theory? The study was to see how variable family conflict resolutions are among each of the within-family relationships. The expectation, or hypothesis was that conflict resolutions would be different based on the family relationship. For example, that parent-child conflicts would be heavily weighted toward win-loss with the parent the winner, where conflicts between spouses or siblings would tend to remain unresolved. It was also hypothesized that spousal and sibling discussions would be more oppositional. This is clearly related to conflict theory as it has to do with the outcomes of conflict within a family. 2. What assumptions and key terms found in conflict theory do you see in this article (Hint: consider all features of the article to help you locate assumptions and key terms. For example, the literature review, research methods used, approach to analyzing the data, and interpretation of the results/discussion.) Some assumptions and key terms found in the article are power differences, control of resources, expertise/cultural capital, and competition for limited resources. 3. What were the key findings and take-aways from this study? How does this support or refute conflict theory assumptions and propositions? The key findings were that parent-child conflicts ended in more win-loss resolutions, with the overwhelming majority ending with the parent as the winner. Among siblings or between spouses, however, conflict ended more in a standoff and remaining unresolved. As for strategies used, parents tended to emphasize planning over opposition with their children, with that being reversed among spouses. Where there was more planning and less opposition, it was more likely that the conflict would reach a solution. These findings support conflict theory’s assumptions and propositions that power differences within the family make a big difference when it comes to conflict (conflict classification). Also, conflict can have positive aspects, as demonstrated with those conflicts that with more planning and less opposition that ended in a solution. 4. What criticisms of conflict theory do our textbook authors suggest? How does one of these criticisms relate to a criticism you have of this article? One of the criticisms of conflict theory is that it does not allow for nuance in power. I think this is true as the study seemed to assume that power was equal among spouses or
siblings, but that isn’t necessarily true. There can be differences in power due to age, access to resources, relationship history, and more.
