Reading Questions – Special Topic: Mental Illness The study for this topic discussing family functioning where there is parental mental illness states that anywhere from 12-45% of adults seeking psychiatric help are parents to minor children and that those children are at high risk for depression, anxiety, and poor social functioning continuing throughout the lifespan. The study compared surveys asking about varying indicators of family functioning in these families and found that families and clinicians were similar in their assessment, while patients rated their family’s functioning more negatively. This improved as their symptoms improved, indicating that, particularly in cases of depression, their mental illness skewed their perception of their family. The study mentioned Process Model of Family Functioning, derived from systems theory, as a framework for evaluating family functioning. Systems theory was mentioned in the videos, particularly roles and homeostasis. The videos also discussed ABCX model as a way to approach solutions to this family problem. 1. The study mentioned that family-based interventions should be offered to families affected by parental mental illness. What are these interventions? Where are how are they best applied? 2. The study was done only on families where the mentally ill parent was seeking treatment. It is common for mentally ill individuals to not seek treatment or to not follow through on their treatment protocols. How can families with parental mental illness be identified and helped when the parent is not seeking treatment?
