TSL 532 Week 6 DQ2 How can building positive relationships with parents of ELLs close achievement gaps? Hi everyone! I have always taken this matter with great responsibility and I am convinced that developing a positive relationship with ELL parents helps close any gaps that our students may have. When I receive the parents of my students just before the start of the school year, this is one of the most important points. Developing a positive, assertive and responsible relationship with the parents/caregivers/guardians of my students is a priority. To the extent that we can establish agreements, assign responsibilities and that they can understand that we are a team, that everyone involved wants the same goal, everything is more bearable. With parents of ELLs it is possible to close the gap by having a close, respectful relationship with the parents. Being assertive when communicating relevant issues about your child and even more about the program. From day 1 I integrate them into Seesaw so that they are up to date with all communications related to the class. The advantage of Seesaw is that they can translate the messages by entering your preferred language. Additionally, all letters sent through the foulder are translated into Spanish so that everyone receives the same information at the same time. Sometimes you come across parents who did not have formal education and therefore do not know how to read or write and it is important to take this into consideration. Sometimes a phone call is a must that is of great help in bridging the communication gap. As an immigrant I try to put myself in their shoes and remember how I felt at the beginning when we arrived, that I didn't understand anything that was happening and the system is totally different from what I knew.
