Reading Questions – Special Topic: Abuse The reading began with some alarming statistics: ¼ of the of the world is impacted by domestic violence and 21% of all violent crime across all race, age, gender, socioeconomic, and education statuses is attributed to domestic violence. Identifying risk factors is a first step in screening potential victims, particularly among health professionals and first responders. Some of these risk factors include biological and personal history, such as age, education level, childhood maltreatment, mental health history, and criminal history. Relationship factors, such as number of children and divorce, and community and societal factors, such as lower income neighborhoods and cultural and social norms, also increase risk factors. The study focused on identifying trends among those applying for Personal Protection Orders in Singapore, which led to some initiatives for domestic violence prevention. These included marriage preparation programs for young couples and regularly checking in with those living in public rentals, particularly families with children. Some of the issues they ran into in the study were ethical concerns, like victim confidentiality, victim agency, and a non-judgmental approach, but they were able to develop a streamlined checklist screening for first responders to identify at-risk individuals so that additional follow up can be done to ensure safety and hopefully prevent domestic violence. 1. The reading stated that past studies have used the ecological framework to examine the role of societal factors in specific geographic regions. What are the results of studies like this in the United States of America? What societal factors exist in America that increase risk for domestic violence? 2. The study focused on gathering information from those who had applied for a Personal Protection Order. What is the percentage of domestic violence victims who seek
PPOs? What individual, relationship, community, and societal factors are present that prevent a victim from applying for a PPO? How can we remove those barriers and encourage victims and perpetrators to get help?
