SPD 570 Topic 3 DQ 1 “We must differentiate our mindset first and our lessons second.” (Dweck, 2012). What does this saying mean to you? In your own words, what is the difference between differentiation and tracking? Tracking is the grouping of students based on their achievement, while differentiation is making adjustments to planned activities for the various ability levels of the class (Tucker, 2016). Teachers must plan effectively to meet the needs of every student. While engaging the gifted students, they must also scaffold supports to those who are working on a lower level. Differentiated instruction is done by assessing students to determine what level they are working on, then employing a variety of strategies to make the curriculum more individualized. Common strategies used to differentiate instruction: Plan activities that vary in difficulty Group students in a variety of ways Be flexible in your expectations Implement technology to individualize practice Differentiated instruction motivates the gifted students to dive deeper into their understanding, while also providing needed supports to students who have a learning disability or are working on a lower level (Tucker, 2016).
