Reading Questions – Divorce In the video, the presenter discussed the prevalence of divorce, primarily that divorce rates are higher in the United States than any other country and that the rates vary based on several socioeconomic factors. Some of the contributing factors or trends for divorce are women’s employment, level of education, the “Gray Divorce Revolution”, and younger couples. As women have been increasingly in the workforce, they are better enabled to provide for themselves, which has increased their options and rates of divorce. As higher levels of education are attained, divorce rates decrease for a couple of reasons. One of these reasons is that risk for divorce decreases with age, so when a couple waits to marry until they graduate from college, they are older. For younger couples, rates of divorce are lower, but this is attributed to lower marriage rates overall because couples will live together without marriage. When these relationships end, they are not included in divorce statistics, so overall they seem to be lower. The presenter also discussed the application of several family theories to divorce. Intergenerational aspects of Bowen Systems Theory, the roles, rules and boundaries of Systems Theory, the culture, community and traditions of Ecological Framework, and the cost/reward in Social Exchange Theory were all discussed. 1. The presenter mentioned a lack of data on same-sex marriages. Do same-sex marriages have the same rates of divorce when adjusted for socioeconomic factors? 2. Do same-sex marriages have different risk factors for divorce than heterosexual marriages?
