SOC-FPX1100 Diversity and Ethics Statement To: Chair, Diversity and Ethics Committee From: Hannah Halstead Date: 9/13/2023 Subject: Statement to the Diversity and Ethics Committee Part 1: Background and Perspective In the first paragraph in this section, describe how your background and ability to apply a sociological perspective would be a valuable addition to the team. In the second paragraph in this section, discuss an example of a time when you intentionally looked at diverse perspectives in order to make an ethical and appropriate decision. Because of my background in sociology and my ability to apple a sociological perspective, I can understand how individuals and groups work together. It also allows me to assess and work towards improving working conditions for employees. My ability to use a sociological perspective allows me to understand how a person’s background influences their behaviors and attitudes. This would be a valuable addition to the team by applying my knowledge to the groups interactions and decision making as well as offering valuable insight to group dynamics. In the position I am in as HR Administrator, I was tasked with increasing employee engagement and implementing policies to do so. I researched many ways to do this because I work for a large manufacturing company, however all locations are separate from each other. I began to realize that we did not work in a very diverse environment, so I implemented employee resource groups to help promote diversity. Before doing so, I had conversations with diverse employees to see how they would feel about them. Women, different races and ethnicities, members of the LGBTQ, and employees of different ages. Because there were few of these employees, it was easy to speak with all of them about how they felt, and excitingly, they were all on board. We started employee resource groups together and slowly they built up. Not only did I accomplish my goal of increasing employee engagement, but employee satisfaction increased, and diversity increased as well. Without consulting diverse team members and asking for their input, I would not have been as successful in this task. Part 2: Scenario Response Review the scenario described in the assessment preparation. Then, write two paragraphs with the content described below. In the first paragraph in this section, explain how you would approach the scenario using diverse and ethical perspectives. Use specific examples from the scenario and your professional or personal life to support your explanation. 1
SOC-FP1100 In the second paragraph in this section, explain why it is important to consider diverse and ethical perspectives in this situation. Discuss how you would you raise awareness and communicate this importance to others at Herringbone University in your role on the Diversity and Ethics Committee. To approach this situation with a diverse and ethical perspective, I would ask to hear the thoughts of the students with concerns. By listening to their stresses and worries, it will allow me to understand what they are dealing with and see their personal perspectives. Once all concerns, opinions, and thoughts have been discussed individually, I would talk to the women about their ideas to remedy the situation. This will allow us to come to a positive conclusion where everyone is able to benefit. In my personal experience, I have dealt with lack of childcare and a company that was not flexible. I moved to a new city with my one-year-old daughter, where I did not know anyone. My work schedule was 8am-5pm and the sitter I found was not reliable. She would call off all the time, show up late, or just not show up. This made it impossible for me to be reliable in my work. I put in my two weeks’ notice to my boss thinking this was the only way, and I would need to find a more flexible job or work from home. My boss asked me what was going on, so I told her. She gave me flexible hours for the next three weeks while I found a new and reliable sitter in town, and she even gave me the phone numbers of three different babysitters she has used and trusted. I was able to get my daughter set up with a sitter who was trustworthy and reliable and continue working full time at my job. My boss being able to apply a diverse and ethical approach to my situation allowed me to keep my job and find a safe place for my daughter. If she had not done that and let me quit without questions or even fired me before I could quit, I would never have found my sitter or been able to get on my feet in a new town. It is so important to approach situations with diverse and ethical perspectives because you never know what someone has going on in their personal life or if there is anything you can do to make their lives easier. It helps you to understand where someone is coming from and solve the problem together. To raise awareness for this issue, I would talk to the human resources department at the university first. This way, I could understand the university’s perspective on the attendance policy, and I would be able to discuss diversity and ethical perspectives. Once the attendance policy is discussed, I would talk to this department and the financial department about childcare options the university may be able to accommodate if attendance policies are unable to be changed. Maybe, the university could offer on-site daycare options of parents while they attend school for a low cost, provide childcare vouchers for off- hours daycare providers, or even allow late evening classes to be taken via Zoom. By discussing the issue with management at the university, it will bring awareness to the issue and having solutions to the problem will help the members understand why using ethical and diverse perspectives is important. It will allow them to see the issue, maybe for the first time, and see there are ways to fix it, which will help them beginning using their own abilities to think and see from different perspectives. 2
