Nuntivacharind 1 7-1 Journal: Information Sharing Nuntivacharind, M SNHU 19 FEB 2024 Instructor William Geimano
Nuntivacharind 2 Prior to 9/11, there were doubts about the sharing of information among domestic as well as international organizations. In many cases, these agencies believed that they did not require assistance in order to maintain the security of our nation, which resulted in information acquired from one agency being rarely shared with another. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, fundamentally changed society. A number of laws, acts, legislations, and new strategies have been enacted in order to defend the United States against future terrorist attacks. The Department of Homeland Security contributed to the unification of all agencies, but appropriate coordination of information exchange among regional, state, and federal authorities remained necessary. All agencies have benefited from the creation of fusion centers by improving communication and information exchange. They coordinate the collection, analysis, compilation, and sharing of threat-related information among state, local, tribal, federal, and private sector partners. (DHS, n.d) As part of the fusion center's mission, local agencies can continue to cooperate while also providing information to state and federal agencies regarding local threats. The same approach is applied if roles are switched; if the threat was identified at the federal level, both state and local agencies would exchange information. A number of factors have contributed to the advancement of information sharing since the 9/11 attacks. (Martin, 2020) These elements include not only new laws and policies created by the US government, but also improvements in communication and technology. These laws and rules require agencies to share priority information in order to assist in the defense of the United States. Prior to 9/11, different agencies did not communicate or share information, and as a result, they were not prepared to prevent the 9/11 attacks.
