Nuntivacharind 1 6-1 Practice Activity: Types of Terrorism Nuntivacharind, M SNHU 14 FEB 2024 Instructor William Geimano
Nuntivacharind 2 A terrorist attack can be categorized as domestic, international, or lone wolf. A variety of factors determine the type of terrorism, such as evidence found, motives, and the individual(s) involved. While domestic terrorism and lone wolf attacks take place within the U.S., international terrorism takes place outside the U.S., but they all share one characteristic. Despite their differences, every single classification poses a threat to American society. (FBI, n.d) Scenario 01: As we can see, this scenario is an example of Lone Wolf Terrorism. In this example, a hotel guest has been staying at the hotel for several days. In addition to binoculars on the table, a box of ammunition, and writing on the guest's shirt that implied violence against government officials in which hotel staff noticed several suspicious things about the guest. During their stay at the hotel, the guest had few to no interactions with anyone, leading to suspicion that they are a lone wolf. Additionally, the hotel is adjacent to the State House and the District Court, raising more concerns. The perpetrators of this type of terrorism are usually individuals who act alone without any clear association to an organization or network of terrorists. Scenario 02: This scenario best describe as foreign terrorism. Undercover FBI agents have infiltrated a chat room with twenty members in multiple states and are actively recruiting new members. As a result of the undercover investigation, several of the members have ties to people on a watch list of known al-Qaeda operatives. The evidence also indicates that this group intends to plant bombs under bridges and tunnels in the states where they reside and to detonate them simultaneously. An act of terrorism committed by a member of a Foreign Terrorist Organization is referred to as foreign terrorism. A suspected terrorist group must qualify as an FTO if it is a foreign organization, engages or maintains the capability to engage in terrorist activity, and presents a threat to the United States. (Department of State, n.d) Scenario 03: This scenario involves domestic terrorism. An example of this scenario involves two inmates who belong to a neo-Nazi organization known as the Atomwaffen Division. Inmates at a state prison were discussing an upcoming attack on a Jewish market and shops frequented by members of their group when a correctional officer overheard their conversation. Individuals and/or groups usually perpetrate this type of terrorism to attain ideological goals derived from domestic influences, such as those based on political, religious, social, racial, or environmental concerns.
