Discussion: Psychological Aspects of Aging Social theories of aging are expected progressions from midlife to older life based on social factors. The key life events that are often associated with older people are their health problems concern, death of spouse, midlife crisis and often of the time leads to depression. Based on the Parker family case, Sara is a 72-year-old widowed Caucasian female who lives in a two-bedroom apartment with her 48-year-old daughter, Stephanie, and six cats, and basically practices hoarding. Sara, key life events that influence her relationship would be the death of her spouse, widowhood, and her family system relationship with her daughter Stephanie which eventually lets to depression and many other development tasks of later adulthood. According to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016), when someone has been married for many years and his or her spouse dies, a deep sense of loneliness usually occurs that seems unbearable and this would eventually leads to depression, mental disorder for older persons and would eventually slows down in their behavioral actions. These are the exact symptoms Sara explain during her session with the social worker, Sara mentioned her psychologist from the Day Center/Program diagnosed her with depression. She also state that ever since the death of her husband, she’s had no one to talk to and has been experiencing loneliness. She even went as far to share that even when her daughter (Stephanie) is present (in the home), she continues to feel the same way. Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman also state that “at first, relatives, friends, and neighbors usually rally to give the survivor sympathy and emotional support…friends and relatives apt to grow tired of listening.
Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016) explain three successful aging theories to be activity theory , disengagement theory and social reconstruction syndrome theory. As a social worker applying the activity theory to Sara case would help her physically and mentally as there is considerable evidence that it helps to maintain psychological, physiological and intellectual functions (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman; 2016, pg. 696) And for Sara to maintain a positive self-image, developing a new interests, hobbies, roles, and relationships with her daughter to replace those that are diminished or lost in late life would of greater help. The second theory that could be apply as Sara’s Social Worker would be Disengagement theory, this theory refers to not only the older people withdrawing from a community, but also older people or community disengagement(Atchley,1983). In Sara case her daughter Stephanie needs to properly disengage from her and as a Social Worker, helping in getting resources for her daughter housing situation which could help resolved the issue of arguing about hoarding and also to the fact that both of them are suffering from depression and Stephanie is bi-polar might help to stay separately. however disengagement theory have some ethical issue and concern as Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016) explain that it might be used to justify society’s failure to help older people maintain meaningful roles. The third theory as a social worker to apply would be social reconstruction syndrome theory. By reinforcing to Sara her self-worth and also by providing resources to Sara that would be beneficial for her to often go out of her home and develop new friends, and network, Kuypers and Benston (1973) recommend to provide older people with the social services they need, including transportation, medical care, housing, and program that provide physical and mental activity. More so providing resources for in-home support services, where Sara can still be in control of her personal space and still get the help needed for her to be active and start getting better .
