Description of the importance of public opinion in addressing the social problem you have selected. According to ( Lee, Lewis & Jones 1990), the common public opinion during the 1980’s held that the main cause for homelessness rested in individual concerns. Based on homelessness study, it was main to believe that, average American main cause of homelessness is due to structural, community and political issues (Lee, Lewis & Jones 1992).Public opinion is important as it may be utilized as a tool or guide in order to create economic policies. It is also important as it might also aid in the spread of information concerning the issue in order to best employ strong communities in effort to eradicate homelessness, since media, socioeconomic characteristics, and personal contact with homeless individuals all seem to impact public opinion on the matter of how the issue evolved. How does public opinion influence political approaches to the problem? According to global journal of Science frontier, peer review research (2015) Homelessness has been a central political topic in the United States for decades. Affordable housing shortages, substance abuse, deinstitutionalization, suboptimal social safety nets, and unemployment all contribute to homelessness. Larsen (2014), also stated that, the media influence what people think about the poor in general and about beneficiaries of social protection in particular the politician influences on policies and social issues in general. According to Adams and Smith (2008) public beliefs on homelessness may also be attributed to tribes, groups of individuals with similar ideas that may be formed through internet communities based .Therefore a prominent homeless population in an area is a very visible representation of a community that is struggling to provide basic or alternative services to the least fortunate. As such, it suggests that the area's political leaders are not doing their best to ensure the community has the resources necessary to alleviate the issues underpinning the homeless population. Moreover, in tackling homelessness in
a region, the preferred approach may vary depending on the local leaders' ideologies. Those inclined to support government interventions will make and support different proposals than those inclined to support methods that will encourage homeless persons to better support themselves. Explain. What policy advocacy approaches and skills can you use to address the problem with political leaders? The homelessness assistance system in most community likely relies on federal resources to operate. Key federal programs like the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants, Runaway and Homeless Youth Act, joint U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers, and countless other resources all come from federal programs. As a result, federal funding and programs are integral to efforts by most community and organization to prevent and end homelessness, this would be a best resources to used and also to lobby among other non-profit organization to come out with various bargaining campaign, that might influence both federal and states policies . What are the social justice implications of your approach? By encouraging policymakers to take action, advocacy can be extremely effective at making change. More so, advocates have made a large impact on federal policy to prevent and end homelessness. Also by bringing awareness to local leaders, one can help influence where this money goes. Attend neighborhood and public meetings and speak up in favor of low-income housing, group homes, shelters, and homelessness prevention programs.
