Lauren Banuelos 9/27/2023 Week 4 Assignment 1
The social institution that I’ll be discussing today are the clinics that are set up to give free mental health care to those who may not be able to afford it. There are several companies that have set up free mental health care such as, MHMR, Tropical Behavioral Health, and Permiacare. I have used MHMR for services for a time and it really helped me out a lot. I was able to see a doctor and get my medications for free. Now they do have income qualifications to meet, but if you don’t meet the qualifications for free care, you could still have the chance of getting discounted treatment and medication. These companies fundraise, government grants, and donations from people to keep their doors open to those in need. Now these are just places in Texas, but I have heard of similar programs in all 50 states. These social institutions can use their power to give access to mental health treatment and medication that may be needed by their patients. People that can afford health insurance and the raising cost of medication hold the power at this point. They can choose their doctors, pharmacies, and even weather to get generic medication or not. These social institutions are giving power back to the people that they provide their services to. The social perspectives that I chose in week 1 assignment were functionalism and conflict theory, I believe that they sit fit my chosen social issue. Functionality still fits because although these programs exist there is still a huge stigma on getting any type of mental health care, free or not. I still want to help people see a different perspective, so they can change their views on mental health issues and mental health care. Conflict Theory also still fits my chosen social issue, resources are still very much in need for people who don’t have the means or don’t qualify for some of the programs available. Some people in this economy can have full time jobs and still not be able to afford health insurance or mental health treatment. Since they have a full-time job, they would not meet the qualifications for the free programs or any type of government assistance. I would love to see more programs that do not require that such strict guidelines be met.
