Affirmative action has been a debate within our society for a long time, with opinions being different on how effective and fair it is. This is why, when looking at the critical issues concerning affirmative action, finding the correct balance between promoting diversity and inclusion is essential while addressing concerns about fairness and discrimination. Having this balance will allow both educational institutes and businesses to foster inclusion within their institutions for those who are in a minority group based on their race, gender, religion, etc. (Harper & Reskin, 2005, p.2). As I stand before you today, I am presenting a new vision for an approach to diversity using affirmative action ideals. The primary goal behind our new vision will be to develop an environment where all individuals feel valued, regardless of race, gender, beliefs, etc. Building this environment within your organization will allow everyone equal opportunities for success, which will help them feel empowered. Those who feel empowered are more likely to feel fulfilled in their lives. Most people who oppose the use of affirmative action view that by giving minority groups equal opportunities, those in the majority groups will not get a fair shot. They will not be given an opportunity within institutions despite being qualified due to being passed over for someone in a minority group. Arguments arise due to this, and reverse racism comes into play when looking to recruit new employees or students. However, it is the opposite when utilizing affirmative action within an organization. According to Harper and Reskin, affirmative action works alongside antidiscrimination laws to end discriminatory exclusions (2005, p. 3). It allows institutions to address systematic inequalities and injustices in our history fully. Policies that can be instituted to help promote diversity within your institution can be as follows. Develop comprehensive plans and outline attainable and measurable strategies to promote diversity and inclusion within your organization. The plan should clearly outline your organization's recruitment ideas about attaining a diverse culture. Ensure that the plan encompasses many different backgrounds to ensure that many viewpoints can be shared. This will enable us to work together better within society as those within your organization have been exposed to many perspectives that can promote positive actions that will help promote racial and gender equality in everyday life (Harper & Reskin, 2005, p.2). It is vital during developing your plan and instating it within your organization that disparities are fully addressed. Creating a diverse environment must be welcoming and include all backgrounds while promoting innovation and collaboration. One of the most critical factors that must be considered is balancing fostering diversity and inclusion while understanding that policies must encourage fairness.
