Report
Program Development LaShonda Gordon Bachelor of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 4005: Generalist III Organizations and Communities Dr. Dana Dillard July 13, 2023
The Problem/Target Population Those who are murdered at the very first attempt when being approached by law enforcement in the community are significantly more likely to have mental illness. Furthermore, due to behavioral problems, homelessness, and poverty, those with concurrent disorder are more likely to be reported by police (Fuller et al., 2015). Due to these issues and the general lack of understanding and awareness of mental illness, many people with mental illness are in contact the police. 03/27/2024 2
Proposed Change Gun violence not only affect family members but the community as a whole and this must change. The proposed program will include a specialized mental health intervention team, tactics to defuse the situation, and educating law enforcement regarding mental illness. This plan will ensure individuals with a mental illness is treated properly, whether that means giving them medical/psychiatric care, hospitalizing them, or if necessary, arresting and detaining them along with a psychiatric evaluation. 03/27/2024 3

Mission 03/27/2024 10 To develop a program that will ensure that emergency personnel and law enforcement are better informed about the signs and experiences of mental illness and crisis. Goal: specialized training in crisis response techniques for law enforcement Mental Illness Awareness Outpatien t Treatment De- escalation Strategies Reform Laws
Summary Police officers must comprehend how individuals may suffer from mental illness or substance use disorder, that this individual need therapy rather than punishment, and that it might be challenging for people who need it to receive proper treatment for related diseases (Fuller, 2015). This is because police officers frequently interact with people who have mental illness. A first step toward better and more suitable reactions and assistance is raised knowledge of concurrent diseases, the special difficulties in identifying diagnosing, and treating them, as well as the variety of issues experienced by persons who suffer from them. 03/27/2024 11
