Innovation Ambition Continuum Comparison Worksheet Isabelle Avilla The University of Arizona Global Campus GEN499 Joseph Marangell 3/10/2024
State potential solution #1: Communicate their open communication with parents by using a third-party app such as class dojo or remind. State potential solution #2: Making sure the staff, everyone in the building etc. is welcoming to parents when they do decide to be involved. Potential Solution #one Potential Solution #two Choice #1 or #two Impact Parents would feel safer about their children in our school due to the open communication. When volunteering the parent(s) or guardian(s) would be more enticed to come back to volunteer at another event. I would start with option #2 because feeling welcome in a school your child is attending is extremely important. Feasibility This option is not feasible for everyone. Communicating through a third party app would be hard to do for those parents that have no internet or cell service. This option is more feasible because the staff and all personnel at the school could be sent to train in making parents and other visitors welcome on our campus. I would say Option #2 is still best in this case due to the training provided to staff being easily obtainable. Then move to option one if the second option does not help. Viability Not all parents have access to phone service which is what is needed for these third party apps. So, not very viable either. The supervisors of all staff could send them to trainings easily and within a few days they could have training made up for them. So, this is pretty viable. Option #2 is still at the moment better than option one. Risk If this is chosen some parents will still be lacking communication and will still feel left out or not welcome. I cannot see or think of any risks with sending staff on training courses on how to be more welcoming on campus. Option #2 is better because Staff will attend the training with little to no risk and will then be trained to be better on campus. Resistance Parents may resist using these apps for personal reasons as Staff may think it is ridiculous to go on a training course like Option #2 is better still because even if staff refuse to go
well as because they would rather come in person and feel welcomed. this, but due to being school personnel they may think they are already friendly enough and do not need anymore help. most times, they will not be allowed to refuse anyway so they will have to participate in the training. Enablers Enablers in this situation would be the teachers themselves of the students. Enablers in this situation would be the administration of the school(s). Option #2 With this option administration is the supervisors and must be listened to go either way training will be attended if they want to keep their jobs. My problem statement is parent involvement in our elementary schools. Within every school district we see a lot of faults and where the school districts could do better. However, one of the most common ones we see that everyone has problems with is getting the parents more involved with their child’s events as well as extra curriculars if they have any. Getting parents involved has been hard because everyone has a life so there is not always time for an extra event to add on your plate. When you have children, these things get hard to keep up with and as an educator I completely understand this. After speaking with parents and listening to some suggestions it seems as if we must appeal to the parents’ senses and make it worth their time to volunteer or help with their child’s education. At this moment schools are not doing anything to improve parent involvement and that is putting more stress on school staff. Furthermore, Schools should have their teachers start using conferences with parents to set learning goals for their children and ask for feedback more regularly from parents. The two recommendations I proposed in this weeks Generating Potential Solutions discussion forum were to communicate their open communication with parents by using a third-party app

such as class dojo or remind, and by making sure the staff, everyone in the building etc. is welcoming to parents when they do decide to be involved. With the first proposition, Many parents would feel safer about where their child is attending school at because they would have constant access to message the teacher if anything were needed. However, this option does bring up some concerns with many parents because of the lack of cell service or cell phone as well as not all parents and guardians having access to the same equipment, we all do and take for granted. There are some risks with this option, the main one being if it is chosen, we will still have parents that are unable to participate and will then still feel unwelcome in our school. With my second proposition, Many parents would feel a lot more welcome in schools if staff were professionally trained on the dos and don’ts when they need to be. This option has less concerns with parents because the staff would be trained in the proper etiquette when speaking with or collaborating closely with parents and this alone would change the amount of participation we have between everyone. The best potential solution for the presented problem from the worksheet results would have to be Option number 2. I say this because professionally training staff the first time before the students return to class at the beginning of the year would be easier and more beneficial for everyone involved. Often times we as staff members get too wrapped up in other things during the school year that we unfortunately forget what proper etiquette looks like when speaking with our students’ parents or guardians. I selected this solution because parental communication is important. However, proper training for staff to act appropriately the first time they are told to is more important. Staff actions is what either deters parents away from volunteering and contributing or entices them to help more. Our
actions speak more loudly than our words especially in this career field with other adults with whom we do not work.
