SOC–324 1-3 Journal: Medium and Message Reflection Kenneth Fulkroad Southern New Hampshire University SOC-324-J8332 Sociology of Crime & Violence Joelle Wiggin March 10, 2024
What are the similarities and the differences among the three mediums? The three mediums - the YouTube video, the podcast, and the written paper - share commonalities in addressing the issue of violence against women, young women, and girls. They all highlight the prevalence of various forms of violence, the systemic roots of gender-based violence, and the need for strategic interventions to combat violence against women. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of education, community participation, legal protection, and comprehensive support for survivors as essential strategies in addressing gender- based violence. However, they differ in their formats and specific focuses: - The podcast presents a conversation between individuals discussing the issue of violence against women, focusing on innovative approaches in juvenile justice and advocacy for youth. - The YouTube video discusses violence against women and the impact on communities, emphasizing the role of legislation, conflict, harmful practices, and emerging forms of violence. - The written paper provides an in-depth analysis of violence against women, outlining the systemic factors contributing to gender-based violence, the impact on women's rights, and strategic interventions to end violence. While all three mediums address the issue of violence against women and advocate for change, they do so through different formats, perspectives, and levels of detail, catering to various audiences and purposes. The podcast offers a conversational approach, the video delves into specific forms of violence and impact, and the written paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the root causes and interventions related to violence against women. Explain how each medium may be more effective in certain ways. In other words, what are the advantages of each medium? When might you use one in lieu of another? Each medium - podcast, YouTube video, and written paper, offers distinct advantages based on the nature of the content and the intended audience. Some of the advantages that could be gained by using a podcast are:
- Engaging: The conversational tone and auditory nature of podcasts can captivate listeners and create a more personal connection. - Accessibility: Podcasts can be easily consumed on the go, allowing for multitasking and flexibility in listening. - Expert Insights: Interviews and discussions in podcasts can provide in-depth insights and perspectives on complex topics. The most beneficial times you might choose to use a podcast are: - For auditory learners who prefer listening to information rather than reading. - When discussing personal experiences, stories, or expert conversations that benefit from a conversational format. - To engage an audience through storytelling and emotional impact. Advantages with choosing to utilize a YouTube video are: - Visual Content: Videos can incorporate visual elements, such as graphics, animations, and demonstrations, to enhance understanding. - Accessibility: Videos can reach a wider audience and convey complex information effectively through visuals and narration. - Engagement: The combination of audio-visual elements can engage viewers and create a more immersive experience. Some examples of when it may be advantageous to use a YouTube video as a medium of engaging your audience are: - For topics that benefit from visual demonstrations or explanations. - To reach a broader audience, including visual learners and those who prefer multimedia content. - When discussing statistics, data, or concepts that are better conveyed through visual aids.

Finally, some advantages of selecting the medium of a written article or paper are: - Depth of Analysis: Written papers allow for detailed analysis, explanations, and references to support arguments. - Credibility: Formal written documents convey a sense of authority and expertise, aiding in academic or professional contexts. - Accessibility: Papers can be easily shared, archived, and referenced for further research or study. Furthermore, it may best serve the intended objective to select a written medium over the other two mediums: - For academic or research purposes that require in-depth analysis and citations. - When presenting complex information, statistics, or frameworks that benefit from a structured written format. - In professional settings where formal documentation is necessary, such as policy papers or position statements. Ultimately, the choice of medium depends on the content, audience preferences, and communication goals. Podcasts are effective for storytelling and engaging discussions, YouTube videos for visual explanations and demonstrations, and written papers for detailed analysis and formal presentations. Selecting the right medium can enhance the effectiveness of conveying information and engaging the intended audience, especially when delivering a message on a topic as sensitive and important as various forms of violence against women. Which one appeals to you most? Which medium do you wish to use for your final project and why? As a clinical psychology major and a mental health clinician at a substance abuse treatment center, the medium of writing most appeals to me for several reasons. First, writing allows me to make comprehensive analysis, provide detailed explanations, and I can best explore complex psychological concepts or research findings in a structured format. This medium enables me to
delve deeply into topics related to clinical psychology and substance abuse treatment, providing a thorough understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, writing aligns with the formal and structured communication style often required in academic settings, research papers, and professional documents. It allows me to present information in a concise, coherent, and well-referenced manner. Another important reason for my selection is that written documents can serve as valuable references, enabling me to document my research findings, clinical observations, treatment approaches, and professional insights for future reference or sharing with my colleagues and peers. Finally, writing allows me to express myself with clear and precise communication of ideas, theories, therapeutic interventions, and assessment techniques in a format that can be easily understood by diverse audiences, including clients, colleagues, and academic peers. This medium is fully aligned with my concentration of study along with my career goals.
