After reading Chapter 1, the student should be able to: 1. 1.1 Summarize the history of crime in America and corresponding changes in the American criminal justice system. 2. 1.2 Theme of this book: the public-order (crime-control) and individual- rights (due-process) perspectives. a. Study: Public Order Versus Individual Rights is a theme that we will find throughout this semester. Be very familiar with the differences between the two and the time periods of American history that we have seen major changes in the emphasis that we as a society have placed on both of them. 3. 1.3 CRMJ and Basic Fairness a. Study: What is justice, social justice, and criminal justice: b. Study Question: Are the ideals of Criminal Justice the same universal? 4. 1.4 American CRMJ: System and Functions Study Areas: a. Describe the differences between the consensus and conflict models of the criminal justice system. b. Which model reflects today’s Criminal Justice System and why? c. What is the relationship to the funding of a criminal justice system and whether it is a Conflict/Consensus model? 5. 1.6 Due Process and Individual Rights a. Be able to explain the Due Process and Crime Control models and how they relate to individual rights and public order. b. Where do we find due process guarantees in the American legal system. 6. 1.7- Evidence Based Practice in CRMJ a. What is Evidence Based Practices relationship to the Professionalization of the criminal justice system.
b. What do the academic studies of criminology, sociology, and psychology have to do with this Professionalization? 7. 1.8- Multiculturalism and Social Diversity in CRMJ Study Questions: a. What is challenging about the Multiculturalism of our society and the practice of Criminal Justice? b. What are examples of this very difficult challenge?
