SOC 270 Assignment: Agents of Gender Socialization: Emphasis – Toys! Name: Raven Easterly Preparation: · Read Chapter 5 of your class book, paying particular attention to Section 5.4. · Watch Module 8 Video #1 : How Does Society Shape People’s Gender? · Watch Module 8 Video #2: Girl toys vs boy toys: The experiment - BBC Stories . Instructions: Respond to questions (1 – 7) below. *Note: Responses (4 – 7) should be fully developed. 1) Distinguish between gender and gender socialization. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, expectations, identities, and norms that a society considers appropriate for individuals based on their perceived sex. Gender is not necessarily tied to one's biological sex, but rather reflects the cultural and social meanings assigned to being male, female, non-binary, or any other gender identity. It is a complex and multifaceted concept that influences how individuals perceive themselves and interact with the world around them. Gender Socialization refers to the process through which individuals learn and internalize the norms, values, behaviors, and expectations associated with their gender identity within a specific culture or society. It is the way in which society teaches individuals how to behave according to their gender, reinforcing and perpetuating gender roles and stereotypes. 2) Identify the five most important agents of gender socialization, per your class book. The five most important agents of gender socialization are “parents, siblings, peers, teachers, and popular culture” (Benokraitis & Buehler, 132).
3) Identify (3 – 5) toys/games/video games you played with as a child. I grew up playing a mix of toys and video games. Notably, I played Pokemon games on the Nintendo DS, Minecraft, Barbie dolls, and Mario Kart on the Wii. 4) Reflecting upon your childhood toys, describe what you learned about gender roles through this sort of play. While Pokemon games themselves do not inherently enforce gender roles, the way players interacted with the games could reflect societal norms. Personally, I gravitated towards gendered stereotypes when choosing Pokemon or identifying with certain characters. I always played with the ‘cuter’ pokemon, while my brother would use the notoriously ‘cooler’ looking pokemon. Barbie dolls have long been associated with traditional feminine ideals of beauty, fashion, and domesticity. When I played with them, I involved scenarios related to fashion, relationships, and household activities, reinforcing stereotypical gender roles. 5) Do you feel that toys have any effect on children’s future adult roles as parents, employers, and workers? Please explain your response. Toys can have a significant impact on children's future adult roles as parents, employers, and workers. The toys children play with, the roles they enact during play, and the messages they absorb from these play experiences can shape their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors as they grow into adulthood. The types of toys related to careers and professions can influence children's career aspirations and perceptions of gender roles in the workforce. Toys such as doctor kits, construction sets, and science kits can encourage interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. Traditional gendered toys, such as toy cars and action figures for boys and dolls and playhouses for girls, may reinforce stereotypical ideas about suitable career paths. But children who play with toys that promote diverse career interests, skills development, and positive work ethics may be more open to exploring various career paths and roles in adulthood. 6) Do you feel that children’s toys should be gender neutral? Why or why not? Children's toys should be gender-neutral, as promoting gender-neutral toys can have positive impacts on child development, societal attitudes, and the dismantling of harmful gender stereotypes. Gender-neutral toys can help challenge and break down harmful gender
stereotypes that limit children's potential. By offering a diverse range of toys to all children, we can challenge the idea that certain toys or activities are "only for boys" or "only for girls." Providing gender-neutral toys supports the idea that all genders are equal and that children should have equal access to opportunities and experiences. It encourages children to see themselves and others as individuals with unique interests and talents, rather than being defined by their gender. 7) Explain what you found most valuable or surprising about gender socialization through Video #2: Girl toys vs boy toys: The experiment - BBC Stories. One of the most surprising things I noticed in the video is that while even the volunteers believed that they were more open-minded, they still subconsciously offered the more stereotypical boy/girl toys to the child. The children's play choices were often limited by the gendered stereotypes associated with the toys, with the "boy toys" often engaged in activities focused on building, construction, and physical play and the "girl toys" tended to focus on softer, caregiving, and domestic play scenarios.
