Child Abuse and Neglect Nicholas Johnson Walden University SOCW 6200: Human Behavior and the Social Environment I Dr. Charity Watkins Dec. 24, 2024
Brandon’s Situation And the Ecological Model An example of how the social worker might have used the ecological model to understand Brandon’s situation was knowing that since Brandon was offended by his father, he developed an issue with following and respecting authority figures. This is true when his teachers and parents agree on this and suggest psychiatric and emotional treatment. This shows a clear correlation of how his home environment has affected his relationships and lives around him. The way the ecological model is used on the micro level is Brandon’s relationship with the social worker who does his initial assessment. This is done on the mezzo level when his mother and teachers are affected by Brandon’s behaviors after being offended. And this is affected on the macro level when the court and prole board are involved in the case and by putting Brandon’s father in jail. It is also done at the mezzo level when Brandon expresses within his narrative the challenges he has faces with his beliefs, values and understanding of society. Brandon and His Mother’s Strengths Some strengths the social worker may have missed was Brandon’s ability and bravery to come forward with the abuse he suffered. This shows strength and courage because Brandon could have harbored his emotions and let them out through other unhealthy outlets such as physical aggression or sexual deviancy. One more strength Brandon showed was resiliency. This occurred when Brandon wanted to express his thoughts and emotions in session and with his father’s parole board. This shows a raw and honest review of how mature he is and how he wants to seek treatment and feel better. Ethics And Values The way the social worker applied ethics and values in the case was by giving education on psychiatric terminate and medications usage to Brandon’s mother. The reason behind this was because the mother was unsure of how seeking psychiatric treatment and putting Brandon on medication will affect his well-being and future. Because the mother was unsure the social worker gave education and options on how to proceed and did not force anything on the mother or the client. Impact of Abuse The challenges the social worker did identify was flashbacks of the abuse that occurred. Trust issues toward others and having to have a weapon by his bedside when he slept. Physical aggression, difficulty following rules at home and school, trouble respecting authority figures, and the usage of inappropriate language with sexual overtones toward female peers. The impact the abuse could have had on Brandon had his strengths not been identified and addressed was could have displayed numerous other issues instead of the ones he displayed. This could include overt sexual deviancy and physical behaviors, substance abuse, lying, harboring information and feelings and possible homicidal or suicidal ideations.
