Question #2: Bagley, Bruce M. “Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime in ... - Wilson Center.” Accessed March 8, 2022. https://www.wilsoncenter.org/sites/default/files/media/documents/publication/BB %20Final.pdf . This source discusses the globalization of drug consumption. Bagley explains how Latin America has often blamed its drug production on the drug addiction running rampant in the United States. This source also discusses the different cartels in Latin America. Bagley also discusses the partial victories as well as failures of the “war on drugs” and U.S. drug policies. This article explains how illicit drug trafficking has changed over the years. The author discusses the legalization debates and how that has affected the global drug trade. Bagley explains how the crime rate in Colombia has greatly increased due to drug use and the drug trade/smuggling. The author describes different cartels in this period and what occurred after Pablo Escobar died and the Medellin cartel dissolution. Bagley, Bruce M., and Jonathan D. Rosen. Drug Trafficking, Organized Crime, and Violence in the Americas Today. Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2015. muse.jhu.edu/book/39885 . This monograph book discusses the evolution of the “war on drugs” led by the United States. The book also explains how cocaine use increased heavily between Latin America, Europe, and the United States. The author covers how the tougher drug policies have affected many citizens negatively. As the Cold War was ending, increased drug use was beginning. Bagley discusses the first drug abuse of Heroin. The drug was introduced and encouraged by doctors as a cure-all but instead, many people died or became severely addicted to the drug itself. The author explains how the United States started incarcerating people for drug use to curb the amount of illicit drug use. The author discusses how the United States began offering drug treatment programs to help people recover from their drug use. Bagley explains the different cartels involved in the drug trade between Latin America and the United States. Falco, Mathea. “The Big Business of Illicit Drugs.” The New York Times. The New York Times, December 11, 1983. https://www.nytimes.com/1983/12/11/magazine/the-big- business-of-illicit-drugs.html . This source discusses the business of illicit drugs between Latin America and the United States. The author describes the supply and demand economics within the drug trade
between Latin America and the United States. The article explains how several people were constantly fueling their addiction and Latin America could barely keep up with production. The author also discusses how the United States was not doing much during this period to encourage abstinence from drug use. This article will be helpful with answering my research question as it explains in-depth about the global drug trade happening between the United States and Latin America due to heavy drug addiction. Shifter, Michael. “Latin America’s Drug Problem.” Current History 106, no. 697 (2007): 58–63. http://www.jstor.org/stable/45318091 . The author explains that Latin American leaders were upset with how little the United States government was intervening in the drug use epidemic. The article also discusses how most of the drugs and even weapons are transported from Latin America, then up through Mexico and into the United States. This article will help with answering my research question as it explains how drugs make it into the United States and how addiction is the main contributor to continued production. Shuldiner, Henry, https://insightcrime.org/news/cocaine-flows-from-dominican-republic-to- puerto-rico/ This article is about the heavy trafficking of cocaine from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico which then makes its way into the United States. The author explains that over 450 packages of cocaine were seized from the boat on its way to Puerto Rico. There has been a continued pattern of cocaine trafficking that has increased in the past year. This source will be helpful with my research question because it shows that drug trafficking is still a huge problem, even today. Weeks, Gregory Bart. U.S. and Latin American Relations . Wiley-Blackwell, 2015. This book/monograph explains the relations between the United States and Latin America. The author discusses the drug trafficking between the countries as well as the violence that goes along with the dangerous drug trafficking world. This source will aid me in answering my research question by explaining the history of drug trafficking between the United States and Latin America. Also, the consequences include, violence due to the violent nature of drug trafficking. Question #3: Instructor comments summarized: consider the period of 1960-1990 and research the proxy wars in Nicaragua. Factors that led to increased drug trafficking between the United States and Latin America. Focus on history, not contemporary.
These sources fit together as they all discuss the relationship and drug trade between the United States and Latin America. The sources also discuss some of the causes that led to the drug trade increasing production as demand increased. The articles and books explain what the United States could have done differently in the past to prevent the drug epidemic we are all familiar with today. Since completing LRA #2, I have changed a couple of my sources to narrow down documents that closely relate to my specific topic. NOTE: I am struggling with the final thesis statement on this topic, any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Thesis: Drug trafficking between Latin America and the United States primarily started in the 1970’s after doctors began prescribing marijuana and cocaine and Americans found themselves addicted to the substances before they even realized it.
