EVALUATION OF SKILLS: CLIENT SYSTEM ROLE-PLAY REFLECTION AND ANALYSIS PAPER Nicholas Johnson Walden University SOCW 6101-3: Essential Skills for Social Work Practice Dr. Leigh Hicks Feb. 04, 2024
My experience in doing the role play was pretty awful. I personally felt it was way too early for me to be doing any role play or experience building activities when I am still trying to build a foundation to my knowledge in social work. I have absolutely no experience in this field, so most attempts are guess work based out of topics learned from the book which can be misinterpreted. Plus, I am fully aware that the previous topics used in the role play but as a 26- year-old city boy I felt lost for words. Even after taking a few days to prepare, I am still unsure of what to say to someone who comes to me with child support issues, issues of addiction and domestic violence. And I realize part of engagement isn’t exactly about problem solving but rather listening. However, I have never experienced any of these issues first-hand, so I still feel I am in the learning phase of social work. I am not exactly what you would call in touch with my emotions as I should be but I am working on it. Specifically, with the video my experience was fine I suppose. It was difficult to figure out how to film the video with a laptop and not a camera or camera-phone. The insights I was given were interesting. However, even with my previous knowledge of the topic that was going to be shared it was interesting to see my reaction of lost words. I usually always have something to say or some sort of reaction but with this sensitive topic I didn’t have much to say. In fact, once the video was filmed to the minimum time requirements I stopped it. I feel my learning style has to do with following directions to what is written and social work I am learning requires more finesse and creativity. This is a problem for me with my
background in nursing. I usually do what needs to be done and move on while having a short conversation with my patients and that’s usually the end of it. With social work it isn’t usually like this. It requires more client-based engagement and letting the client direct everything while in the hospital the doctor runs things. So, for me it’s a whole new dynamic I have to re-wire my brain into getting ahold of. Because of all of this I have learned to approach my future clients pretty differently and a little more carefully. After re-reading the book on engagement and speaking to my professor I understand the topic in a different light. That’s one of the reasons I prefer to get all the knowledge I can before role-playing or going into the field. The specific engagement skills I used was active listening, making sure the client knew this was a non-judgmental zone and listening attentively/ empathizing as best I can. Active listening was used throughout the film by me simply listening to what the client had to say. Upon reflection however, I believe I talked a little to much and should have let the client take the reins and give more information. I also should have asked way more questions instead of just trying to solve the problem. Social workers must deal with people and the issues they come in with but also with them speaking on those issues and me as the social worker attempting to get to the root of the issue by listening and engaging. I am not exactly sure I did that. The next was making sure the client understood this was a non-judgmental zone. I did this by explaining this concept numerous times and asking if she understood what I was saying. She says she did. The last technique used was empathizing as best I can. I recognize that I struggle with empathy or rather showing it. But, for my first role play I think I did ok. I wanted the client to understand that understood what she was saying and was able to place myself in her shoes for a moment in

order to feel what she is feeling. It was difficult and definitely could have gone better especially if I had asked more questions but all in all not bad in my opinion.
