HSE 315 Case Analysis Outline The outline below is based on the critical elements required for the Milestone One assignment. Use this outline as you complete Milestone One and submit it to your instructor when complete. Address each item below with at least two sentences for each question. Cite any sources in APA format, including a reference list at the end. Milestone One : Outline of Case Analysis – Needs A. Assess the impact of physical trauma on the children and family. i. What are the short-term impacts of this trauma? While there could be a long list of short-term traumas for the children and the family, I think the most important ones would be anxiety, dissociation, acting out in anger or violence, to name a few. This is because Eloni has been acting aggressively and has had no changes in his behavior. ii. What are the long-term impacts of this trauma? For families and children long-term trauma can be a list of things some could be PTSD, dissociation, depression, to name a few. While it depends on the event everyone does react differently and “how an even affects an individual depends on many factors, including characteristics of the individual, the type and characteristics of the event or events, developmental processes, the meaning of trauma and sociocultural factors. (Understanding The Impact of Trauma) iii. How do the impacts differ? The impacts could differ for many different reasons. This could be because of the long-term effects of the trauma or how the outcome is of the child acting out in anger and/or violence. When determining the impacts of long-term and short-term can depend on whether these impacts last for a little bit or for a long time. Most children can return to their previous levels of functions after weeks or months. iv. How are they similar? They are similar because whether they last for a little bit or for a long time, they are both traumatic. Something that will always stay with them. Something that they will always think about in the back of their mind and that they can remember how they felt when those incidents happened. B. Discuss the needs that are present due to the physical trauma on the children and family. i. How are these needs trauma-related? Eloni needed to be removed from the home for the safety of Kolomalu to prevent any more abuse. Eloni needs the therapy to be able to address his emotional, mental, substance abuse, and behavioral issues. The reason for Eloni acting out in the ways that he is, is because of the abuse he endured from his previous stepdad. Anamalia should also enroll into counseling and parent classes, so she is able to learn how to deal with the issues that her family is facing and to be able to help her children heal moving forward. ii. How are the needs different for short- and long-term trauma? The short-term needs are able to be addressed quickly to be resolved much faster, such as removing Eloni from the home. Long-term needs will require more time to be able to control and help the issues. This would be counseling for the family together and individually. iii. How are they similar? Whether they are long-term or short-term all needs are being addressed to be able to get treatment no matter how long it should take. Both long-term and short-term can benefit everyone in the family and individually since their end goal is to be able to live happily and function properly as a family. C. Assess the impact of psychological trauma on the children and family. i. What are the short-term impacts of this trauma? Everyone interprets trauma in different ways, and one may experience different emotions regarding the experiences. Kolomalu might have feelings of shame, anxiety, or guilt. Anamalai may feel embarrassed, or like a failed parent for not protecting or helping her children. Eloni may feel sad, mad, or even confused as to why this is all happening.
ii. What are the long-term impacts of this trauma? Long-term impacts can range all over the place. From erratic emotions, flashbacks, or even broken relationships. Eloni did not express himself in a healthy manner and a way for him to avoid his memories and thoughts he acted out and took his feelings out on others. Kolomalu and Eloni could experience flashbacks of their abuse either for a period of time or indefinitely. iii. How do the impacts differ? Psychological short-term trauma is normal for people to experience and are able to be worked through with therapy. Whereas long-term impacts can negatively affect a child all the way up to adulthood if their issues are more severe or they aren’t putting in the work. Having the proper treatment is very important to be able to work through the issues that you are facing. iv. How are they similar? Both long-term and short-term do require immediate attention as they do affect the mental state. If they are left untreated it could turn into lifelong issues. If Eloni does not get the help, he needs he will not be able to feel and work through his emotions like he needs to and will consistently get into trouble and might even end up in jail or prison, if he becomes violent. Kolomalu might be resentful and even angered at different situations if he is not able to process and not taught to feel his emotions. D. Discuss the needs that are present due to the psychological trauma on the children and family. i. How are these needs trauma-related? As a family Anamalia, Eloni, and Kolomalu all need help for them to be able to process and deal with what they have experienced. Anamalia has expressed how important it is for her to keep her family together and is willing to do whatever it takes to do it. It seems that reunification is a good goal but only if everyone is willing to work together to get there. Meaning they would have to continue counseling to be able to work thorough their issues and making sure everyone is heard and feels important. ii. How are the needs different for short- and long-term trauma? Short-term for the family could include the start of counseling or intervention as quickly as possible. The long-term for the family would be to ensure that the family continues to get the help they need. iii. How are they similar? They are both focused on ensuring that the family is able to receive the help they need for their mental well-being and that however long it takes for them to achieve that goal, counseling is important. E. Discuss the risk and resiliency factors for the children and family. i. What factors are present? There are many risk factors for the family. Anamalia is a single parent, unemployed, having financial issues, is under a lot of stress and feeling helpless and overwhelmed, does not have the resources to be able to provide for her children. Kolomalu has been physically abused by his brother, he has to deal with the emotions of the abuse, and the emotions of his brother being removed from the home. Eloni was abused by his previous stepdad, has aggressive behaviors towards his brother, neighbors, and classmates, substance abuse, suspended from school and removed from his home. There is some resiliency for this family as they have a strong tie to the local Pacific Islander community, Anamalia has a master’s degree and is currently applying for jobs, Eloni is a smart and well liked boy, and Kolomalu is playful and outgoing. ii. How do these relate to the specific issue in the case? The risk factors are related because Eloni experienced abuse and since it was left untreated, and he didn’t properly deal with his emotions led to his emotional and behavioral problems that resulted in him physically abusing his brother, and more issues after like a domino effect. If Eloni had been treated properly then it is possible that all the other issues wouldn’t have fallen in line like they did. iii. How do these relate to the ages of the clients? The ages of the family all affect how each one of them reacts to trauma. The earlier one experiences trauma can have a greater impact on their life. “Trauma can affect developmental processes, attachment, emotional regulations, life assumptions, cognitive interpretations, of later experiences, and so forth” (SAMHSA, 2014). However, if you are able to treat trauma at an early stage, they would not
have had to deal with the issues that they encountered regarding Eloni. If the children get help now, they would be able to have a less chance or impact of that trauma later in their life. For Anamalia, while she is able to recover from the trauma with counseling or therapy, she will still have that added stress always with her. She is less resilient.
